National Guardsmen as highway patrol aides debated
The Des Moines Register argues against using National Guardsmen as aides to highway patrolmen in heavy traffic. It supports expanding the patrol's force from 225 to 341, notes night patrols by one officer per car, questions cost and training, and asserts Guardsmen should remain for defense and emergencies rather than state police work. It warns one man patrols work elsewhere, but if issues arise, revert to two-man patrols with a larger force.
