Chrysler plant creates new union shift with lower pay
At the Belvidere, Illinois Chrysler Group assembly plant a large third shift will be hired under an agreement that pays less and offers less job security than existing union members. Experts say the move challenges UAW clout and is unprecedented for a Big 3 plant amid rising nonunion foreign competition. Labor expert Harley Shaiken notes the shift to tolerate this while protecting core jobs and principles built over years.
