Police: We did what we thought was appropriate with stray emu

CARBONDALE The Carbondale Police Department owns a tranquilizer gun but lacks experienced emu handlers. Animal Control Officer Cindy Nelson advised against handling the bird, noting emus are dangerous and hard to subdue. With no owner, experts said the bird would almost surely have to be destroyed. The department said they consulted veterinarians and animal control, stressing they did not shoot without guidance.
