Bush signs major overhaul of mine safety law
President Bush signed the first major update to U S mine safety rules in 30 years. The law requires more underground oxygen supplies and new lost miner tracking and communications gear within three years. It follows a wave of deadly accidents including Sage in West Virginia where 12 miners died. Randal McCloy Jr loved one of the survivors attended the White House ceremony. Governors Rendell Manchin Fletcher and others praised the bill while activists pressed for stronger refuge chambers.

Bernanke Warns on Inflation Risks From Energy Costs
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told the Economic Club of Chicago that energy prices are likely to stay high, with inflation expectations in focus. He warned that high energy and commodity prices could sustain core inflation and urged vigilance to prevent a self fulfilling rise in prices. Oil near 69 dollars per barrel and gas above 3 dollars a gallon underscore mounting price pressures.
