Arlinda Marshall, 29, of Carbondale died from chest wounds after a dispute during a card game near East College Street housing units. Eunice Higgens, 26, of Murphysboro, held on murder charges after police captured her at the scene.
A force of 150 guards state and local police and deputies with helicopters and bloodhounds combed the mountains near Brushy Mountain Pen Saturday for James Earl Ray and four other inmates who escaped. Powell, 27, captured eight miles west of the prison, was returned in handcuffs and says he did not partake in the original plot. Ray and others still at large are believed to have split up as authorities close in. Ray, serving 99 years for the murder of Martin Luther King Jr., fled the 14 foot wall Friday night with five others using a makeshift ladder.
