Four new wardens named in state prison shakeup

The shakeup at Illinois prisons includes four new wardens at Stateville Menard Vandalia and the Logan Center after Warden David Brierton resigned. Ernest Morris becomes Stateville warden, Michael Lane leads Menard, Leo Meyer heads the Logan Center, and John Heckel takes Vandalia. The changes also promote Marie Hall Magnolia Liles and others as assistant wardens or majors.

Southern Illinois areas bid for new state prisons

Gov. James Thompson said two new prisons costing 50 million will be built in Southern Illinois areas showing interest. Estimated 500 to 700 inmates and about 400 jobs. Lawrenceville area and another Southern Illinois location expressed interest. Final site decision by August. Pope County site proposed on federal forest land.

Standby gas tax defeated by House Ways and Means panel

The House Ways and Means Committee defeated Carter administration proposals on a standby gasoline tax and a rebate program for fuel efficient cars by wide margins. A scaled down standby tax would be delayed to 1979 with harsher penalties in the 1980s, and the rebate plan was rejected 31 to 5. The committee also voted 18 to 17 to remove the federal tax deduction for state and local gasoline taxes.

AAUP drops SIU-C from censure list in unanimous vote

At the AAUP annual convention in Madison Wisconsin delegates voted unanimously to remove Southern Illinois University Carbondale from its censure list. The 1973 censure stemmed from the case of Douglas M Allen a former philosophy assistant professor who claimed his job loss followed his criticisms. Allen settled a related lawsuit for 35000 dollars.
