Betty Gordon, 55, started the effort 20 years ago and still welcomes the calls from alumni and distant fans. Corbin Reed notes about 3,000 calls are expected before lines close on December 22. Dorm residents fund and staff the project, spending hundreds of dollars and answering calls from Alaska to Australia. Gov. James R. Thompson is a regular caller.
