Amusements tax dropped in Carbondale plan compromise
Carbondale City Council rejected a 2 percent amusements tax in favor of a 4 percent hotel motel tax and a 1 percent restaurant tavern tax proposed to fund a 4.25 million parking garage bond. The panel also approved a quick take land acquisition process and a $140,000 promise to hotel center developer Stan Hoye if land isn't turned over within a year after a federal grant. Evidence from student leaders and merchants showed concern over the impact on diners and entertainment venues. The measure differs from an earlier plan which would tax meals amusements hotels and motels.
