Governor Blagojevich unveils an Illinois energy plan promising 30 000 jobs mainly downstate to cut foreign oil dependence. The proposal aims for 50 percent of state energy from biofuels and coal by 2017, including up to 20 new ethanol plants five biodiesel plants and 10 coal classification plants.
Southern Illinois students began the new term with mixed fatigue and enthusiasm. Superintendent Mark Bullock of De Soto Grade School noted one quip about going home early at 10:30 a.m. Science teacher Renee Lefler described sixth graders’ wide eyed curiosity and locker fears. John A Logan College President Robert L. Mees spoke of the broader start to a new year, while Benton High School staff organized schedules and classroom locations.
A 21 year old Carbondale woman is hospitalized after multiple stab wounds on Monday. Suspect Jonathan Earl Schaffner, 22, of Carbondale, is jailed on attempted murder and related charges after police tied the incident to a car break in and a pursuit near the Illinois Secretary of State facility and a Kroger lot.
Grand Tower resident Bianculli, 43, disappeared Sunday afternoon while swimming at the Grand Tower boat dock after fishing all day. A multi agency search by Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Tower Rock Fire Protection District Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Murphysboro Police dragged the river bottom into the night. Bianculli remained afloat on his back as rescuers used boats nets and four wheelers to locate him amid darkening conditions and rising concern for his two daughters and girlfriend.
