Cancer-stricken soldier returns home to face months left

Bloomington native U S Army Col Dirk Spanton, a Special Forces veteran of three Iraq tours, has months to live after a cancer diagnosis. He says he feels lucky to have had farewell time with his wife Julie and five children after years of danger and sacrifice. He recalls near misses in Iraq and notes his illness followed a Memorial Day homecoming. His family awaits his remaining time as doctors project about six months.
