Reduced charges trim prison time for killer
Kenneth Vann, 23, was sentenced to 20 years for second degree murder in the 2005 shooting of 19 year old Gilbert Feliciano. The charge was reduced from several first degree murder and weapons counts. Parole could begin Aug. 19, 2015, with good behavior possibly cutting actual time to under half. Vann’s earlier plea bargain was declined before he later accepted the reduced charge. He drove from Murphysboro to Carbondale with two others, confronting Feliciano over a dispute, and fatally shot him in the head. Korey House pleaded guilty to a weapons charge and testified against Vann. A videotaped Chicago Police Department interview is part of the record.

JALC revises policy on hiring family members
The John A. Logan College Board of Trustees adopted changes to the hiring policy Tuesday night to bar family members of trustees administrators and faculty from employment. Domestic partners and anyone living in the same household are now included in the family definition. Part-time workers and student staff remain unaffected. A mandatory full disclosure procedure requires employees and trustees to reveal personal or professional relationships with job candidates. The policy will be reviewed quarterly by the board hiring committee and again at the June 2007 meeting.
