Oregon faces a gasoline shortage as state law requiring a 56 gravity grade halts deliveries. Mills and logging camps may shut down, farmers shift work, and merchants consider late or eight o clock closing to curb losses. Road fund needs 4 percent bonding, not new taxes.
County school superintendent argues Oregon taxpayers face about 40 million dollars in untaxed education support. The Two Mill Elementary Tax would allocate funds to districts with large valuations like Upper South Slough and Dora while easing the burden on smaller districts such as Lower South Slough and Pleasant Hill. The measure, not an overall tax increase, aims to reduce reliance on unequal district taxation and is continued on page 2.
The editorial urges a yes vote in Oregon on the M53 road bond measure to raise the constitutional limit from two to four percent. It argues bonds will fund road projects including Roseburg Myrtle Point, with no property tax or higher license fees, and predicts strong Coos County support while warning of delays and higher costs if defeated.
