City council approved extending the Fourth Street water main to the new high school site and installing a hydrant on the ground, but budget limits blocked other planned mains. Typhoid indicators in water prompted boil-water advisories and biweekly health board tests.
Advertisers and news contributors are asked to cooperate to produce Myrtle Point's The American. The paper requires a full week to publish, not one day, two days, or three. Early copy helps print a better paper for Myrtle Point businesses and property owners.
Russell Dudley Harrington, 28, died when a high line pole struck him while with a logging crew at Powers last Thursday. He was laid to rest in Norway cemetery after a funeral in Schroeder chapel led by Elder Tommy Barklow. He was the eldest of several children and lived with his parents who mourn his loss.
The sixteen months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Nosler suffered a deep cut from an axe while playing at home. He received sixteen stitches and was brought to the Nosler home near the doctor. he is recovering well under care with Geneveve Crowley and the MacDonalds family assisting.
T R Bartlett of North Dakota closed the purchase of the Guerin Hotel cafe from Mrs Ireland. He and his wife Mrs Bartlett, already longtime restaurant operators in Oaks North Dakota, take possession that evening with their child. Mrs Ireland plans rest and no immediate plans.
Pat Collier and his brother Jim, loggers at Rock Creek, were struck by a falling tree last Saturday. Pat suffered shoulder and arm injuries but helped Jim, who sustained back injuries and remains unable to work.
Charles A. Howard, Marshfield school chief and former Coquille educator, announced this week as a Republican candidate for state superintendent of schools to replace resigning J. A. Churchill. Howard has long been active in regional school work.
City leaders convened with Mayor Ellis Dement and six councilmen plus key staff including Recorder B A Dodge, Marshal Tom Culver, Attorney Wallace Dement, Water Supt W M Weekly, and editor of The American. The treasurer J M Arringn and Health Officer Mast were absent, indicating active city governance.
The Church of the Brethren filled its pews as Elder J. B. Emmert of La Verne College spoke on The Goal of a Christian Life. Visitors from Olympia Albany Ashland Bandon Portland Weston and more registered and multiple sessions focused on Sunday school education temperance and missionary work.
Electors in Union High School District approve a 17 600 bond issue by 106 to 29 to complete the new high school building enabling agriculture and domestic science instruction this year and leave funds for grading the grounds. The board plans transportation and lighting work but takes no further action. The grammar school opens September 8 with 12 teachers already engaged.
L. H. Pearce, longtime Myrtle Point automobile dealer, has sold his Marshfield salvage venture to a Portland firm. The transfer occurs soon, while Pearce will keep operating his Myrtle Point shop, continuing his Dodge car line and twenty years of local trade.
Rev. James L. Carrick announced plans for a Myrtle Point Catholic church on Oak and Second. The structure, patterned after Brookings, will cost about two thousand dollars and use native fir and cedar with a Myrtle wood altar. Non Catholics are expected to fund the project.
Barklew and his wife discuss moving plans after selling their home. They anticipate spending part of the winter in California to improve health, with Mr. Barklow not in good health and seeking the sunshine. They have not finalized their future arrangements.
Harold Stemmler escaped serious injury last Saturday night after jumping from a motorcycle on a grammar school grounds before it toppled over a concrete wall to the street below. The bike belonged to a friend and Harold was not accustomed to riding it. the loss of balance caused the incident, but the machine was soon repaired and Harold was smiling.
Smith Hughes agriculture will be added to the Myrtle Point Union High School curriculum for the coming year. The program provides practical farm education through classroom study and at home farm projects supervised by an agricultural instructor with college training and five years of farming experience. Freshmen and sophomores may take Animal Husbandry. juniors and seniors take Soils and Crops with farm shop work and two double periods daily. Interested students should contact Earl Sagricultural instructor.
Dr. Snyder manager of the chamber of commerce received a formal protest from the Bandon chamber against naming the Coos county folder The Evergreen Empire of the Coos Bay District The county court funds pay for the folder and the name should represent the entire county The engraver in Portland holds copy for cuts and immediate action is urged to avoid extra expenses Harbor
The Southern Pacific reports 6000 feet of track laid daily on the Natron Cut Off through Oregon. Chief engineer Geo W Boschke notes the 118 mile Kirk to Oakridge gap closing rapidly and the summit distance at Odell Pass reaching 4317 feet. Work will continue into winter with favorable weather.
Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Cutler left Saturday for their Fresno California home after a ten day stay in Myrtle Point and nearby places. Mr. Cutler noted Myrtle Point’s rapid growth including a new city hall theatre and Pearce building. They will reside near Selma where Mr. Cutler has farm interests.
The state shows rising optimism with better business conditions. Myrtle Point reports no habitable houses for rent while Marshfield and North Bend note crowded streets. Logging camps are busy, crops are strong, and tourist travel is heavy as winter nears. Mint in Denver coins many two and a half dollar gold pieces for the holiday season.
Call for Fords so strong last week that Emery and Nosler delivered vehicles to agencies beyond local area with four units to Eugene and single units to Toledo and Salem.
Mrs Crooks was brought on a speeder from above Camp 4 last week and underwent an appendicitis operation. She remains in a very grave condition.
As The Americans goes to press three prisoners who shot two guards at the Salem penitentiary last Wednesday evening remain at large. They were last known to be in Portland Monday night but their trail is lost amid rumors of sightings. Murray’s parents live on an island near Seattle, and he boasted of a visit. the island area is being closely guarded.

John Myers, a Hotelling sawmill worker, was brought to Clarke hospital with bruised shoulders and amnesia after being dropped near a curve. He recalls little after leaving a ride and walked to the Chase Parker home before Myrtle Point admission. Police presume a vehicle struck him on the highway.
