The Associated Clubs of Woodlawn announce their annual dinner for June 14 at the Hayes hotel on University avenue. Mrs Paul I Pierson chairs the event and Mrs G W Payson handles ticket sales. new officers will be installed and a special entertainment program is planned.
Civic leaders sponsor a gala fete to mark the completion of the improved interstate traffic artery known as the Southeast Gateway. Organizations will unite to celebrate the milestone and the projected easing of congestion.
The Southeast Gateway traffic widening plan, a $986 188 safety program, will connect Ewing Ave to 95th St through Mackinaw and adjacent streets. Chicago Motor Club and 23 South Side groups sponsor a major celebration marking the forthcoming opening late this Summer. Frank Rydzewski leads Russell Square Improvement.
Southeast merchants join to supply a complete formal wardrobe for the winner of the Miss Woodlawn contest. The event coincides with the opening of the Woodlawn theater at 63rd Street and Kenwood Avenue. Eligible girls age 16 to 25 must live within defined boundaries. Sponsors include Star Department Store Shields Jewelry Tower Shoe Frank Sachs and photographer William Cartier. the prize covers attire from head to foot.
In the Jackson park lagoon, two Black youths aged 16 and 11 drowned while swimming with their 12 year old brother Robert watching in horror. The tragedy occurred as they sought relief from the mid-summer heat near the lagoon channel. onlookers and a mother on shore raised the alarm but could not save them. Local authorities began inquiries into the incident.
Brief profile of Arthur W Michelson principal at Hirsch High School. Born in Allertonia he studied at Iowa State Teachers College and the University of Chicago earning BA MA and PhD. He taught in Iowa and Chicago before leading Hirsch High School for seven years. President of the Chicago Principals Club and member of Masons and Oriental Consistory. He favors a new high school near 76th Street and Bennett and supports neighborhood school growth.
The former Josephine Huebsch daughter of Julius J Huebsch and Mrs Huebsch 5515 Everett Ave was married to Milton S Altbach in a ceremony at the Windermere East Hotel.
A corner stone ceremony for St Francis de Paula parish church at 78th street near Grand Crossing Park will occur Sunday at 4 PM. Rev D J Dunne and Rev George A Parker will preside with altar boys in procession from 7822 Douson Ave to the site where the first mortar will be placed. Construction began last Easter and is slated for completion next Easter with an estimated total cost of 240000 dollars. The parish was established in 1911 by Archbishop James Bigley. Rev Ambrose Murray is the present pastor.
Woodlawn post No 175 American Legion hosts the annual Mardi Gras at the 131st Infantry armory with Pauline Feld of Commonwealth Edison Drum and Bugle corps crowned queen. The event features multiple state bugle corps contests starting at 2 pm including groups from James J Senior No 118 Lafasette No 41% and others, riding a white horse with a $1 006 saddle. Bertha Heiner celebrated her 90th birthday at her daughter’s home 9236 Cottage Grove Ave. Surrounded by four children, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren she recalled girlhood days and 43 years in the Southeast community. Born Bertha Rewmann in Germany she came to Chicago at 21 with her mother and sister.
City officials and transit executives push toward a unified plan for Chicago traction. Mayor Kelly and the Abbott committee seek consolidation of surface lines and receivership relief with eventual purchase of the Chicago Mole Coach and elevated systems. A civic committee led by Willam J Lynch and others prepares a report to judge Wilkerson outlining a merger friendly pathway.

Kawanis Club at Woodlawn Wednesday. Grand Crossing Chatham Lions Club today at Grove Restaurant. Chamber of Commerce meets Monday. South Shore Lions Club Tuesday. South Side Swedish Club hosts Tuesday at 7936 Ridgeland Ave.
Seniors will be recognized at a community event this week with plans for awards and remarks. Organizers invite families and local officials to attend as part of the annual recognition program.
More than 1000 Southeast high school students will receive diplomas in the next ten days as year-end activities wrap up. Hyde Park High School leads, with 471 graduates marching in caps and gowns under presiding officials and speeches by Dr Louis L Mann. Other ceremonies include Calumet High School and Hirsch High School with 123 and 269 seniors respectively, featuring valedictorians Dorothy Oppenheim Erwin Hornung Lisbeth Howe and addresses by Chosen speakers.
