Court action to condemn land for 87th street vocational school

The Board of Education seeks condemnation to acquire 22 acres for an industrial vocational school at 87th street and Chappel avenue. Judge Frank Righeume says case filings should occur within two weeks, with completion of condemnation and trial about two months away as negotiations failed.

Boy Scouts Plan Annual Dinner At Bryn Mawr Church

More than 300 parents and sons expected at the annual Scout dinner in Bryn Mawr Community church on June 4. Veterans to Hold Special Memorial Day Ceremonies

Southeast Heads Named to Direct Historical Week

Four Southeast residents were named to direct city wide observances for Historic Chicago Week. District head Peter DeHaan leads South Side Day on June 11, with Mrs Paul I Pierson directing Woodlawn exhibits and Rev. Thomas M Laneweaver arranging South Chicago displays. The 90 piece Farragut High School band will greet Mayor at opening Sunday June 6.

Crossing Chamber Backs South Shore Drive Widening and Filtration

Grand Crossing-Chatham Chamber of Commerce approved two resolutions supporting widening of South Shore drive from 32 to 46 feet and building a Southeast filtration plant. The vote followed a South Side safety memo linking the Southeast Gateway highway program to bottlenecks at 1st to 83rd streets.

J M Hecker vice president of the Grand Crossing Chatham Chamber of Commerce is profiled as a 35 year resident of the community. Born in Hamburg Germany in 1984 he immigrated at 17, studied in Jamieson City Pa, moved to Chicago, earned an electrical engineering degree at the University of Illinois, and ran Street Lighting Service after 14 years with Commonwealth Edison. He served two years as a Department of Justice operative during World War II and is married with three sons and a daughter Naomi. His civic affiliations include the Hyde Park Lions Chatham Lions Property Owners League Jackson Park lodge AF and AM Oriental Consistory Medinah Shrine and the Society of American Military Engineers. His record as a public servant and community leader underscores his enduring civic pride.

WPA Lake Front Landscape Nears Completion

A WPA project reshapes the Chicago lake front from 12th to 55th streets into a celebrated landscape. August completion is anticipated with 45th street promontory featuring slag foundations, 700 trees, and a shelter. Jackson Park sees bath house rehab, bird sanctuary work, 20 tennis courts, and Japanese garden restoration. Further south from 95th to 101st streets a Calumet park foundation progresses with trees and shrubs, aiming to transform barren land into a scenic area with lake views and recreational facilities.
