A narrative recounts swindlers who forged checks across major cities from Chicago to Dallas. They used a gilt-edged bond to obtain a $20 000 loan in Chicago, marking the bond, then cashed false checks nationwide. Their scheme shows returns as they redeem and counterfeit the bond.
Lewitz Furriers at 1202 EB 63rd St reports three well dressed robbers forced owner and two workers to the floor in a dawn heist. They seized 20 to 25 fur coats valued about 5000 dollars before fleeing when an automatic light switch buzzed and cut the power. The trio fled in a rear alley car.
Jerry Hutcheson, 14, Hyde Park high school freshman, was alone making homemade matches when a chemical explosion at 9 pm Friday shattered a bathroom window. He suffered a serious injury to his right eye, a badly cut left hand, and two teeth driven into the lower lip. The family rushed him to Jackson Park hospital for emergency care.
WPA crews start installation of a brick sewer to alleviate sanitation needs in the 7th Street area. H. EK. Seltzer says a $478,215 allotment funds the six to eight month job connecting with the pumping station at 74th street and Stony Island avenue. One hundred new workers reported Friday, with a later 500-strong crew. 6,935 feet of main line and 240 feet of connections required. Labor is WPA except for a few skilled workers.
At a Christmas meeting of the Third District American Legion council the seven members of the 1939 Chicago Convention committee were elected. Bud Singman said Chicago is likely to host the 1939 convention, with Los Angeles slated for 1938. William C. Henry distributed gifts to delegates and Edward Butler reported 66,000 World War veterans ill in hospitals. National Commander Daniel J. Donerty will issue greetings Christmas morning.

Churches invite thousands to Christmas Eve and morning services with candlelight processions, two vested choirs, and festive programs. Windsor Park Eyat telical Lutheran at 7600 Saginaw will conduct dawn services with Marian Willing and Carmell Cartwright among soloists and a two-choir program led by Harry T. Carlson. Essex Community Church at 7400 Blackstone hosts dawn candlelighting and a children and adults program after a Sunday school party.
Five hundred Woodlawn shoppers attended a grand drawing Monday night in the Casino Moderne at 913 E 63rd St. The Woodlawn Business Men's Association staged a four week Holiday Festival culminating in a first prize of $250 in cash presented by R J Demerese, executive secretary of the B 68rd St council.
Donald Bennett, 32, of 1441 East 71st Street, was shot early Monday while resisting two holdup men on Tith Street between Cornell and East End avenues. He slipped on the sidewalk, broke his glasses, and described a shot fired by one assailant before three suspects fled in a car heading north on Cornell.
Slippery street conditions in the Southeast community Wis week caused six injuries in separate automobile incidents. H Glade of 7941 Constance was hospitalized after a freak crash near 75th St and Stony Island Ave, with other victims treated for unspecified injuries.
The Southeast Economist concludes its Christmas Cheer contest with five prominent men to judge hundreds of entries. Winners of the 1938 Ford V-8 Tudor Sedan and nine other prizes will be announced in next Thursday's edition based on the highest value of Christmas Cheer tickets submitted.
