Nu Beta Epsilon plans an achievement dinner at the Palmer House on February 6 to honor Barnet Hodes Corporation Counsel and former Seventh Ward alderman. Hodes, a founder of Nu Beta Epsilon, leads the Institute of Municipal Law Officers and has published three books on public affairs.
Funeral services for Dr Eleonore E Richter pioneer woman physician were held at Starrs chapel with burial in Oakwoods cemetery. She died Friday in South Shore hospital at age 65 and had practiced in Chicago La Porte Indiana and St Joseph Michigan. Survived by husband G Rienter son Louis F Kruchter and brother V Essinger vice president of First National Bank of Chicago.
Isadore Kavin of 8111 Jeffrey Ave. dies after his car collides with a train. Twelve others are injured in the same accident.
A Southeast community faced two fatalities and twelve injuries during the holiday period as drivers collided with a Michigan Central train and other accidents. Isadore Kavin, 42, of 8111 Jeffery Avenue, died when his car struck a northbound train near 130th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue while en route to Calumet City. He owned Hammond Cleaners and Dyers. An inquest at Doty’s Funeral Home returned an accidental death verdict with a recommendation for brighter blinker lights at intersections.
14 year old Jerry Hutcheson, son of Mr and Mrs Herbert Hutcheson of 1022 Chappel, is recovering sight in his right eye after an explosion from a home made chemical set. Doctor Sidney Walker reports clearing, may need glasses, return to Hyde Park High soon.
Burglars broke the rear door glass at Sue Sum Chinese restaurant at 2209 E 71st St and stole about $100 from the cash register between 10 pm Christmas Eve and 3 am Christmas morning. Owner George Lee of 824 61st Pl reports the loss and entry method.
John Hayes president announces the Woodlawn Business Men's Association will start its 30th year at a weekly luncheon in the Hayes Hotel. A gala anniversary party is planned. Hayes succeeds George T Webster Jr who leads local business groups and hotel associations.
Southeast depositors of the Citizens' Trust and Savings Bank urged to contact the receiver at 3452 S. State St. if they moved since the last dividend. A five percent payment, the third since August 4, 1930, totaling 53,694.10, was mailed, authorized by Edward J. Barrett the auditor of public accounts.
Community leaders in the Seventh and Eighth Wards extend New Year greetings while outlining numerous planned projects for the year. Local officials emphasize infrastructure upgrades, public safety, and community services as top priorities for the coming months.

An inquest found death by own action while temporarily insane. Survivors include widow Edna and two daughters Lenore Katel Eleanor Reinger and son O Clyde Black Jr. Burial in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
Members of the Woodlawn Property Owners League plan their annual dinner on January 23 at John Knox hall in the First Presbyterian church 64th street and Kimbark. Leo T. Heid announces reports from officers and election of 15 directors plus a surprise entertainment program.
Dr H B Fox president of the Rhoades Community club spoke to the Chana Gra Chatham Chamber of Commerce meeting at the Grove restaurant. Introduced by Louis McMacken the club has grown to 350 members with a focus on organized, diverse events and active participation by members.
A chaotic early bulletin reports a youth bandit shot by Burnside Police Officer Michael Fleming after a store incident. It notes the death of Gustav Rahn, a pioneer resident aged 84, plus city street sign and right of way work plans. Several diplomas awarded to Southeast High schools. a kidnapper is sentenced to life imprisonment.
Max Schmidl was elected president at a June Shore Lions meeting in the South Side Swedish area. The gathering, noted for its community leadership, also appointed Parsons to a presidency and outlined a full slate of new officers.
A Southeast residence was broken into on Christmas Eve between 8:15 PM and 12:15 AM. Entry used a pass key to front or rear door, robbing the home of jewelry and cash including two watches and a brooch, with an estimated loss around 80 dollars.

Winners divide a 1300 prize list from the Southeast Economist Christmas Cheer contest. Flora Adrian of 6325 Kenwood Ave won first prize a 1938 Ford V-8 Tudor Sedan for submitting 3685.65 Cheer tickets. Alice Farrell 1437 Rhodes Ave took second prize a 1938 Spartan radio with 2350.80 in tickets. Third to sixth prizes went to J H Leonard 7316 Maryland Ave, Mrs. Charles Toll 7624 Cottage Grove Ave, Harry A Trumbly 6551 Oakley Ave, and Mane Tracy 616 EB 8th St with tickets ranging from 2296.25 to 2000.45. Seventh prize a complete Bigin bicycle went to Michael Rodak 8145 Fuclidave with 1696.40 tickets. Bright priva bicycle awarded to Mrs. Paul Holmes 7324 Champlain Ave with 1547.05 tickets. Daniel Roderigo 7103 Ridgeland continued.
