Lloyd Baker of the Third District VFW led police to a vacant lot at South Chicago and Greenwood avenues where a flourishing marijuana patch was eradicated. Baker, a former Pershing expedition member, warned seeds reach canaries as a stimulant. past canary-feed links cited.
Alderman Roy E. Olin reports that the Board of Education will consider Chesterfield residents requests to include Burnside school in the Hirsch high school district as boundary changes near next month aim to ease Hirsch congestion by shifting students to the new South Shore high school opening next February.
Michael Davoren of 614 E 87th St and Charles Sleith of 7612 Saginaw were robbed at separate gas stations. Davoren lost $30 after a youth armed with a steel blue revolver demanded cash from the register at 2435 E Tst Pl. Sleith, attacked at 3110 E 79th St last Saturday at 10 30 am, reported a $50 theft with the bandit escaping.
A Negro gunman tried to rob Citizens' Loan Association at 6240 Cottage Grove Ave on Monday. He demanded cash with a gun, but staff dropped to the floor and obeyed, while four employees and two customers remained calm. The bandit fled, abandoning the bag as police found no usable fingerprints due to smudges.
Prominent Southeast side Jewish leaders greet Rabbi Jacob Weinstein arriving from San Francisco to take the KAM temple pulpit at 50th street and Drexel. A reception and welcoming committee, with officers and community members, precedes his first sermon on Rosh Hashanah eve. Weinstein will broadcast Labor Day remarks on WJJD and discuss Jewish holidays on WENR.
Hyde Park on the Southeast side plans a free fur show tonight at the Shoreland hotel to preview its Golden Jubilee in mid September. The event starts at 8:30 PM with fifty photographed mannequins modeled by city residents and fur from North America and top world centers showcased by committees led by Henry Himmel and Ror mar Feeley.
Chesterfield Council will sponsor the Labor Day celebration at Tuley Park on 90th Street and St. Lawrence Avenue. The event features a Bicycle Queen, a full sports program with softball games, free movies and evening dancing. Committee chair W. D. Frank leads with helpers J. G. Stokes and others.
Officials of the Illinois Central announce the experimental platform gate at the Jeffery avenue entrance of Bryn Mawr station on the South Chicago branch will begin operation tomorrow. The device uses an arm and apron to block crossing the tracks when trains are in or approaching the station.
Pearnell St Aubin, a three foot eight inch teen from Chicago, rises as a nationally known figure by age 16. He spent time at the Century of Progress Midget Village in 1933 where he toured with Buddy Rogers, served as a baton helper, and later appeared in The Wizard of Oz in color at Loop theaters. He lives with Mr and Mrs Albert St Aubin at 8436 St Lawrence Ave and attends the Wescott branch Calumet.
Two Southeast side school teachers Mary F. Dooley and Della Byrnes arrived in America from Europe unaware of the continent’s war news. After sailing from Galway August 20 on the Franconia and enduring a late voyage blackout, they only realized the crisis upon reaching New York newspapers.
Southeast side residents gain long sought bus service with a preview and trial run from Jeffery Ave to Green Bay Rd on Sunday September 17 ahead of a Monday September 18 start. Alderman Thomas J. Daley led the campaign. Chicago Surface Lines ordered five new buses for the 83rd St route and others, with three for 83rd St but six weeks away. Mayors, congressmen, and state officials are invited, along with numerous civic leaders and residents.
Sylvester Blozak and Anthony Kaczmarek, both sailors, were detained by South Chicago police on a robbery complaint filed by Ray Sandberg of Bemidji Minnesota. Sandberg said the two men tried to rob him as he slept in Bessemer Park. He wrestled free and alerted authorities, who arrested the suspects after responding. Police conducted lie detector tests, while the unidentified July 31 tennis court death in the park remains unsolved.
South side councils of the Little Business Men's League for America will join Townsend clubs of the Second Congressional district for a meeting at 8 pm next week. The event, at Grand Crossing Masonic hall 7443 Ingleside avenue, is announced by Adolph G. Kirbach secretary of the South East Chicago council. Speakers include William Castleman national organizer and Tom Thornton representing the Townsend clubs. Mrs. J E Jamison chairs the Townsend district aided by Charles E Peters.
County Treasurer John Toman reminded Southside property owners that tomorrow is the final date to pay the second installment of 1938 real estate taxes without penalty. After the deadline a 1 percent monthly penalty will be added, totaling 12 percent per year with no reduction allowed by law.
