Man Who Built First House In South Shore Dies at 81
Edward John Van Reeth, longtime Southeast side settler and builder of one of South Shore’s first homes, died Sunday at his daughter’s residence. He was 81. A Belgian native, he worked 45 years in Armour and Company’s foreign department before retiring. The three story frame house at 7448 South Shore still stands, where his family of seven children grew up. He came to the United States in the late 19th century and married Olava Wang of Norway in Chicago.
