Explosions At Hercules Plant Kill Five, Dozens Hurt
In Kenil New Jersey six workers were injured and five killed following three blasts at the Hercules Powder Co plant known as the dynamite swamp. The explosions began at 12 36 pm and echoed to New York City fifty miles away. A nitrator housed 3500 pounds of nitroglycerin and two purifiers contained explosives. The area was sealed, homes damaged, and 600 workers were present at the time. Investigation into the cause was ongoing with no definite details.

Firemen Receive Diplomas After Somerset Fire School
About 200 firemen were awarded diplomas Sunday after completing a four day fire school in Somerset. Instructors were George Cartwright and John Kysel from Johnstown. Topics included ladder and house evolutions, tank fires, gas use, chemistry and ventilation, and gas mask use at the Somerset water works. Richard Miller chaired the county school committee and serves as vice president of the County Firemen's Association.
