Tornado And hailstorm devastate northern Somerset County
A mid afternoon storm sweeping Hooversville Stoystown and nearby areas pummeled the region with hailstones the size of hens eggs and baseballs for about 15 minutes. Windows were shattered trees toppled and buildings damaged including a Wilbur Coal Mining store front and a newly completed bridge. One farmer Homer Dunmeyer suffered major losses with his barn grain and equipment. Dozens of structures including churches and homes sustained damage and livestock was affected as residents described a tornado like force and widespread destruction.

Two Accidents On Turnpike Sunday Morning
Two crashes occurred on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near the Allegheny tunnel Sunday morning. A westbound tractor-trailer, driven by Wilmer Mercer of Centralia Illinois, caught fire causing about 6000 dollars in damage though the trailer survived. the tractor was destroyed with no injuries. A sedan driven by Mrs Elizabeth Schroth of Niles Ohio rolled over after leaving the roadway in Somerset county. she was uninjured and the car sustained about 300 dollars in damage.

Two Injured In Crash Near Central City
Two people were injured in a two car crash about three miles south of Central City Saturday night. Joseph Kushner of Central City and Harold G. Ankeny of Central City were involved as Kushner blinded momentarily by another car caused the collision. Ankeny stopped to turn left. Kushner received head injuries and Charles Ricak, also of Central City, had head lacerations. All treated at Windber hospital and discharged. Estimated property damage was 1300 dollars.
