Bravery at Santiago Harbor Ends with Merrimac Sinking

Admiral Sampson ordered the sinking of the collier Merrimac to seal the Santiago harbor channel. Lieutenant Hobson led seven volunteers who faced heavy fire, succeeded in anchoring the vessel, and sank it with an internal torpedo. The crew escaped death but were captured by the Spanish flagship.

A Spanish cable reports an American warship blown up while passing the Santigo harbor mines. All aboard perished except one officer, an engineer, and six seamen who were captured. Vessel name not revealed.

Wolcott amendment authorizes coinage of treasury silver bullion at 4 000 000 monthly and seignorage notes up to 42 000 000 in silver certificates.

Cadiz Squadron Nearing Cuba Heads for Santiago de Cuba

A Spanish fleet from Cadiz is nearing West Indian waters and should arrive off Santiago de Cuba today to reinforce Admiral Cervera. The force includes battleships and three torpedo boats, according to Port Antonio sources via the Associated Press. Brown & Piper's advertises McCormick mowers Hollingsworth Star and Champion hay rakes.
