Salt Lake Cut Off Would Shorten Route Forty Miles
Salt Lake Tribune reports Southern Pacific surveyors plan a Lucien to Ogden cutoff across Great Salt Lake. The proposed line would touch the lake’s southern promontory, cross shallow water, and eliminate heavy grades over Promontory hill. One engine could haul fifty cars on the new route, compared with twenty cars by four engines on the old path. Construction progress begins within months, with trestle lengths around thirty-eight miles total, adjustable by a southern divergence near Strong’s Knob to reduce first trestle length.
