The community reports only a few influenza cases this week, aided by better care and seeking physicians. Nationwide and in camps the illness is improving with few deaths. the public meetings ban has been extended to November 2 and may continue longer in some areas.
The E. J. Gemmer general store has been moved from the room north of Norman drug store to the Paulus room at Main and Jefferson streets. He is arranging the stock and will add new merchandise to his already large supply.
Robert Llwellyn son of Grover and Myrtle Huffman was born in Lakeville Indiana on March 25 1917 and died in Alxton Indiana October 18 1918 at age 1 year 6 months 23 days. He is survived by his parents one brother Cecil two sisters Mable and Mary and many relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon October 20 with burial east of Silver Lake Indiana.
Rev. O. B. Wells of near Syracuse is improving after weeks at home with neur al gia and rheumatism and hopes to resume duties in a week or two.
Robert Leckrone in France writes an engaging letter to his uncle Fred Horne. This installment continues the nephew’s correspondence with Fred Flurn and is published in sequence.
A traveler notes choosing a resting spot during a long journey. He describes darkness, about forty men sleeping nearby, and maneuvering carefully inside a swaying car to avoid disturbing others as he settles for the night.
John C. Beagle 78 died at his Warsaw home after a period of Brights disease. He served as county auditor from 1908 to 1912 and was widely known across the county.
The general election is set for Tuesday of next week. Voters are urged to study the two tickets and select the best candidates for the office based on capability and character.
Mrs. Mary Mills has stayed the past week to care for her brother S. T. Rittenhouse southeast of town. Rev. W. H. Rittenhouse and his wife from Bourbon are also assisting in caring for his brother.
A correction notes Ralph Kreamer was misidentified. Russell Kreamer at Camp Winona was chosen from about one thousand boys to drive a large car and haul officers between posts. He is praised as an excellent, capable youth for the position.
Mrs Mable Martindale has been released from S South Bend hospital after an operation. She traveled home Tuesday afternoon and stood the trip well. She feels fairly good but remains weak and hopes for full recovery in coming weeks.
Mrs. D. F. Homman who has been seriously ill at the Sidney home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Deaton for over two weeks is slowly recovering and will soon be able to return home.
M. D. Yotter, longtime postmaster, has been bedridden with influenza after a 35 year run of daily service. His daughter Miss Zeta and visiting Temp Maurer helped run the office during his illness as the community hears of the sickness and hopes for a quick recovery.
Mrs. I. A. Snoberger travels to Joliet Illinois with plans to stay indefinitely. Her husband is a traveling salesman for Star-Peerless wallpaper mills of Joliet where his headquarters will be for the foreseeable future.
Jacob Haney raised a large stock of beets in his patch behind Mrs. Rantz home. He brought one beet to the office the other afternoon and it weighed about twenty five pounds.
Miss Beulah Martindale returned home for the week from South Bend where she taught. She stayed in the city to be with her sister after an influenza closing order kept her there and the sister was recovering from an operation in the hospital.
A message from W. W. Hamman at Hammond reports two children Ruth and Richard Hamman ill with influenza. Mrs Ezra Hamman traveled to Hammond to assist in care.
Paul Kerlin, a carrier on Route Two, returns to work Wednesday morning after two weeks at home with influenza. The update notes he had been confined to his residence until this illness subsides and he is fit for duty.
Mrs. Rickel died early Saturday at her brother A D Sands and wife’s home near Yellow Creek lake. Survived by husband and three sons Guy Carl Clyde and daughter Fern. Carl serves in France. Remains sent to Glennie Michigan for burial. funeral held Wednesday at the home.
A former Silver Lake boy now general foreman for the Virginian Railroad in Sewall's Point reports from Norfolk in 1918. He notes a busy naval base area, 75 miles of track, and coal piers unloading at 75 cars per hour, inviting local sailors and troops to visit when stationed nearby.
The United War Work Campaign plans a nationwide drive from November 1 to 18 to raise 170.5 million. It highlights seven major agencies Y M C A Y W C A National Catholic War Council Jewish Welfare Board War Camp Community Service American Library Association and Salvation Army. A speaker will address the town hall next Friday and explain the groups work for soldiers at home and abroad.
Maynard Young and Russel Kerlin visited on furlough from Valparaiso Military School. They joined the motor truck corps with their party and praised the Boys Home’s training and facilities while in uniform.
The Methodist Episcopal Church announces its church and Sunday School will reopen on Sunday November 3 after illness restrictions. Activities include Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. and preaching at 10:30 a.m. with a sermon on Intercessory Prayer. Pastor John F. Blocker invites all to attend.
Sherman Rittenhaus residing southeast of town has been quite sick for weeks and showed little improvement recently. A trained nurse is at the home assisting in his care.
Mrs Walter Hamman and her children traveled to Hammond Sunday and expect to stay for the winter in furnished rooms. The family intends to reside at that place for the season.
T A Jontz traveled to Camp Custer Tuesday to be with his son Russel who is in camp and recovering from an illness described as influenza pneumonia.
Mrs. Morris Lipley brought two large turnips to the office last Friday. The largest turned in a 22 inch circumference measurement.
An open letter from Jesse E. Eschbach to Kosciusko County citizens argues for his return to the Indiana legislature as a representative. It lists supporters including J. Pr. Goodrich Gov Harry B. Smith and Will H. Hays and names Edmund M. Wasmuth as state Republican chairman. The missive cites critical times and Eschbach’s qualifications for public service. The letter opens addressing citizens of Kosciusko County Indiana and outlines reasons for his candidacy.
