Widespread flu cases across the country prompt school closures social gathering bans and postponements of public sales and church services for the week and possibly longer. The disease has affected soldiers in training camps and new cases appear daily in cities and rural areas, including Winona Lake.
W H Kern chairman accepted the flag for the township after Lake Township exceeded its quota in one day and the county ranked third in the state to go over the top. The flag was placed on display across Jefferson Street.
Home on furlough five days for burial of brother Gus Hill. Flerbert Hill left Camp Custer Michigan Sunday to attend funeral and will return Friday. Ralph Kreamer from Camp Devens Massachusetts visited ten days with wife and relatives. Will Wedrick of Great Lakes naval training station visited family over Sunday. Irvin Way from Camp Custer arrived with his wife after a furlough due to his mother’s death. they spend time with Way and Tullis families.
One thousand Hoosier boys from every county arrived at Winona Lake on Tuesday October 15 to take training in the new army camp. Buildings have been altered to meet government demands. Russel Kreamer of this county is among the troops.

Miss Opal Ramsey daughter of Mr and Mrs J A Ramsey north of town and clerk at Big Four North Manchester marries Russel Lukenbill former operator for Pennsylvania lines in North Manchester and Logansport.
Funeral services were held in Claypool for M. Downing a long time undertaker who died at 42 from pneumonia after a Spanish influenza attack. He ran the family business with his brother in law Charles Tucker and was active in Odd Fellows and Royal Arch Masonry. Survived by wife and children. The War Industries Board endorsed indefinite daylight saving time to conserve coal and aid war workers, noting potential coal savings nationwide.
Clarence Montel age 25 died at Camp Sherman Ohio after influenza pneumonia. His body arrived in Claypool Monday and funeral was held Tuesday at his Claypool home. He was the husband of a very ill Ft. Wayne hospital patient with typhoid fever. He was the only child of Mr and Mrs John Montel.
Mr and Mrs Carl Wood of Casey Illinois came here last week for the funeral of Gus Hill brother of Mrs Wood They remained this week as Mr Woods school is closed due to influenza.
Last Friday at noon a message announced Gus Hill’s death in the hospital at the Student Officers Training Camp Valparaiso college Indiana. He is the first local soldier to die in this world war. Gus left behind two brothers in service Dean in France and Herbert at Camp Custer plus a brother in law Russell Shoemaker in France. He had recently disposed of the garage he operated for his brother and then traveled to Urbana Illinois with Silver Lake boys for military training.
John Shireman, an elderly resident of Seward township, was taken to the county infirmary Tuesday evening by Trustee Hill.
Bartholomew County Indiana raised its fourth Liberty loan quota to 900000 dollars, subscribing 111 percent of the 925000 dollar goal with no solicitation. Local effort met the target in a single day, reflecting strong community support.
Mrs. J. W. Way aged 53 passed away at her home southwest of town Sunday evening after a long illness. She had been an invalid for about twenty years and recently contracted Spanish influenza. Survived by her mother Mrs. Sarah Fisher, husband, six sons including Joseph and Bert of Battle Creek, Irvin at Camp Custer, Eugene nearby, Harry and Kenneth at home, and many relatives. Funeral was Wednesday at one o'clock with burial in South Pleasant cemetery.

The boys were not very ill but were released and back on duty by Tuesday. Elweed Kerlin stayed only a couple days while H G Jantz and O D Young remained until Tuesday afternoon.
Elsie Cook married Charles W Studt on Sunday afternoon at two at her Warsaw home. Only immediate relatives attended. The bride is the daughter of Mrs Princess Cook and granddaughter of Mrs L W Myers of Warsaw. Studt, a geologist from St Louis, works in Oklahoma and expects to be called for chemical warfare work in Washington soon.

The report notes George Bohnstedt, a high school graduate, traveled to Urbana on Saturday September 28 and enrolled in the military school there. It describes him as an energetic boy who should make good if given a chance.
Clarence Hamman and family moved to Fort Wayne last Saturday and will make it their future home. Mr Hamman has steady employment there.
Charles Brown received a letter from his son Orville at Camp Sherman Ohio. Orval is recovering from Spanish influenza and is able to be up and around. He reports he expects to be home on furlough within two weeks once pronounced able for the trip.
Mies Inez Clinker receives a longletter from George Lamar a wireless graph operator on the U S Ships Zeelandia. He describes influenza fears in New York while awaiting a berth and notes he may soon be promoted to wireless telegraphy with a salary over two thousand dollars per year. He mentions Lecy Daniels and a nine year service record including trips to France aboard the Zeelandia.
E W Gresso and Joseph Kerlin traveled to Urbanna Illinois Tuesday to visit Gordon Gresso and Delbert Kerlin who are in a military camp there and have been sick. George Bohnstedt is also in the hospital and is reported as much improved.
Grover Arnold detained at Murphy home wear town due to a month long illness from Camp Sherman. He was unable to return to camp today because of the sickness.
Mrs A A Mahoney aged about died at her home two miles from Palestine on Wednesday morning after a three year illness with dropsy and heart trouble. The remains were taken to Alexandria Friday for burial.
