The Spanish influenza epidemic prompts broad closures of schools, churches, theatres, and public gatherings across Indiana and most states. Officials urge staying indoors for those ill, noting vaccines offer partial protection, and warn relapses can lead to pneumonia. The illness typically lasts five to seven weeks with fever reaching 102 to 103 degrees.
J W Yates of New York stayed several days last week and visited the L B Yount home, spending a few hours Saturday evening before boarding his train back home.
Thirty five members gathered at the Reason Rickel home on the Beaver Dam lake bank for a family reunion. The gathering was described as a very good time with warm fellowship and shared memories.
The Spanish influenza outbreak in the county has caused many school absences with about thirty pupils out Monday. Eva Shillings and Ruth Rowland were critically ill but improved. Undertaker F M Downing in Claypool remained in critical condition as physicians attended him.

Charles Brown returned home from Camp Sherman Ohio after visiting his son Orval who is seriously ill in camp. He said the boy was somewhat better but still quite ill when he left.
Word arrived Monday that Russell (Brown) Jontz was very ill at Caap Custer Michigan. His father T A Jontz and brother Everett went there at once and found him very sick but, in the latest report, a little better.

Miss Mabie Martindale, a schoolteacher in South Bend, was taken ill last week and rushed to a hospital. An operation for appendicitis was performed Thursday evening, and she is reported progressing nicely with hopes for a rapid recovery and return home to this place.
George Dash, living northeast of here, donated 500 bath towels to the Red Cross last week. The act highlighted a generous community gesture aiding relief efforts.

Edward J Beigh 21 died at Camp Taylor Kentucky after a week long illness caused by Spanish influenza. He was drafted September 3 and reported to Camp Taylor. Survived by his parents Mr and Mrs James A Beigh and several brothers and sisters. Remains brought to the family home for funeral held Wednesday.
Hugh Snyder of Chicago reports he enjoys military life despite 4:30 a.m. wake ups. He is completing a dentistry course with government military training support.
In Los Angeles a Santa Fe fast train collided with the Doutt car on September 20. Mr and Mrs Samuel Doutt and their daughter Lois were badly bruised. Mrs Doutt is sister to Mesdames Pearson and Underhill of this area.
Attendants from Milford area joined relatives of Ancil Geiger at a funeral service held Sunday afternoon near Milford. W I and Charles Geiger along with the A S Sprigg family were among those in attendance.
Mr. and Mrs. S. N. Rickel of Glenne Michigan traveled here for the funeral of Amanda Sands whose services were held last Thursday. Mrs. Rickel remained for a longer family visit after returning home Monday.
Physical examinations of class one men began this week at Warsaw with twenty men examined daily. An estimated total of 325 to 350 class one men will be obtained.
M M Rager writes from Toledo Ohio dated October 4 reporting his family now live at 2808 Monroe Street after moving from Edgerton Ohio last week. He plans to go to France as soon as papers are ready and currently runs a garage from 8 30 to evening.

A North Maine young lady married in North Manchester early Monday morning at 2 30 oclock. Rev A L Wright officiated. The groom, now a U S Army corporal at Camp Taylor, entered service last April. The bride is the daughter of Mrs Ira Grossnickel. The wedding party left North Manchester soon after the sixth Sunday ended to depart as early as possible after 6th Sunday.
