Lake Township led the county by reporting quota progress in the Red Cross drive on Monday with a total amount raised that easily surpassed expectations. The drive emphasized community giving and support for relief services.
The Lake township Red Cross drive began at 8:00 a.m. Monday with solicitors busy in their territories. Most residents contributed generously while a few households refused to donate. organizers plan follow up. In three hours and ten minutes, reports continued to page two.
Congress approves act bringing all men aged 21 since June 5 1917 under the draft. President Wilson issues proclamation fixing June d as the date for new eligibles to appear before local boards. About 800000 men expected for the army by next registration with plans for more frequent registrations, likely quarterly.
Local Red Cross workers begin sewing Tuesday afternoon at the school building with several units following in order on successive days. An urgent appeal asks for additional help, hoping to mobilize all who feel a sense of patriotism.
Twenty five men left the county for cantainment camp and a further thirty one will depart Saturday to Camp Taylor. Those who went to the Columbus Ohio barracks Tuesday and are well known here include Orval G. Carr John Lackey John C Helser and Ralph C Kreamer.
Walter Barber and his children visited South Bend last Sunday to see Mrs. Barber who has spent two weeks at Epworth hospital. She is said to be recovering well and getting along nicely.
A decoration service will be held at the South Pleasant church at two o'clock in the afternoon conducted by Rev. Samuel Frantz of North Manchester. An appropriate program has been arranged for the occasion.
The American Red Cross establishes a training school at Winona Lake Indiana offering a six week course from July 8 to August 16 for students preparing for government or home service.
Miss Zeta Votter has assumed the postoffice role after Miss Maurer resigned and is learning the duties, performing the work promptly and well.
Silverlake representatives attended a War Saving Stamps district meeting in South Bend on Tuesday. A drive will start next week with committees to be announced. aim is over two billion dollars in sales for the United States, about two and a half dollars per person. The public is urged to buy stamps to support the government.
Miss Mildred Jones died after several months illness and tuberculosis. The funeral was held in Mentone last week, with the 16 year old daughter of H. E. Jones staying with her aunt and uncle Mr and Mrs George Smith south of Mentone. She had visited here on numerous occasions.
Miss Tempe Maurer, a clerk at the local post office for two years, resigned last week and traveled to Marion on Tuesday seeking new employment. Her faithful service and presence will be missed by the public.
A family reunion was held at the A. J. Kreamer home in the east part of town last Sunday. Relatives and friends gathered with baskets to surprise Ralph Kreamer before his reporting for duty in Columbus Ohio. Many named attendees from nearby towns attended including Roy Kreamer, William Smith, the Isleys, the Ramseys, and others.
From Kentucky camp Paul Snyder writes his mother describing heat and rain and a park visit for ten cents. He notes others leave daily and he may stay longer as he earns stripes, hopes to return around June 8, and mentions cigars candy and a brief glimpse of Ruth Army of Wabash.
The K of P lodge will meet at the hall Saturday at 2 pm to march to the cemetery for a group cleanup. All interested residents are urged to join with tools such as pickaxes shovels rakes or mowers. the work should take only a couple of hours.
A quarterly meeting is set for Friday at 2 PM at the U B Church in this place. Evening services will follow with the District Superintendent delivering the sermon. All are invited to attend.
The Township Sunday School convention scheduled for May 26 at the U B church has been postponed indefinitely. A new date will be announced later.
The remains of Mrs. Mary Jane Blair widow of David Blair were brought from Erie Pennsylvania to this community for burial. The Blair family lived here many years and were well known locally.
Mary Jane Strain born in Indiana on May 21 1843 died in Erie Pennsylvania on May 18 1918 at age 74 years 11 months and 27 days. She married David M Blair in 1864 and had six sons and a daughter. Three sons and her husband predeceased her. She lived in Indiana most of her life and spent her final years with daughter Mrs Glyde Rhodes in Erie. She leaves three sisters and many relatives.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon in the Methodist church by Rev. J F B Blocker. Scripture text Rev 22 12 and 14. Interment followed in Lakeview Cemetery beside family members who had preceded.
We express gratitude to Silver Lake residents for assistance with our mother's burial. Special thanks to those who opened their homes. Mrs Clyde Rhoads and Brothers, the family, and attending relatives Bert Brant and wife Mies Chapman of Warsaw, and Mrs William Hill and daughter Gertrude of Goshen.
Walter Barber and family express gratitude to the Franklin Sunday School members for the beautiful flowers sent on two occasions. Mrs. Barber has been confined in a South Bend hospital for the past two weeks.
Miss Hazel Brown visited her relatives in Hammond Sunday. Ralph Huffman, in U.S. service at Great Lakes, joined for a few hours. Miss Brown says her father, long ill, is much improved and could walk across his room Tuesday.
The neat sum of 75.45 was realized from the dinner last Thursday and the Mazda class turned the amount over to the treasurer of the Lake Township Red Cross chapter to be used for war relief work.
Marion Swibart visiting from Chicago with her mother spent several days here in the latter part of last week while on vacation.
Leo Leonard recent Elk Hart employee in Big Four offices returns home for a visit. He has enlisted for special railroad work and will be rushed to France through a detention camp when called into service.
Mr and Mrs L D Underhill received word from their son Tony at Van Buren that he has enlisted in the United States military service and expects to enter a detention camp about June 1st. He will then be sent to France as soon as possible.
John Oldfather and Madge Wisler received large pictures from Union Oldfather stationed at Camp Taylor. The photos depict the company and may be viewed at Corner Drug Store. Union Oldfather and John Gall appear in the pictures looking fine.
Orval Craig of Montpelier Ohio visited with his father Joan Craig and accompanied him to Indianapolis for a few days to stay with Chet Craig who is in government service there.
Miss Vera Kern attended Indiana polis last Thursday and has entered school there.
Voters must register by October 7 to participate in next November’s election. The registration board opened this week at the Warsaw courthouse. Those unable to visit the county seat can obtain registration blanks at the REcorp office in Silver Lake and submit them from home.
R Jontz represents the local Odd Fellows lodge at the Indiana IOOF Grand Lodge semi annual session in Indianapolis. He travels Wednesday morning and plans to return Thursday evening.
Were entertained members of the Mothers club last Friday afternoon by Mrs. Ernest Myers.
Last Friday afternoon the embroidery club was entertained by Mrs. C. A. Pearson, who visited and spoke to the group.
A family reunion was held at the Al Carr home north of town Sunday. All the children and their families gathered to be with Orval for a day before he leaves for camp in Ohio.
