Winona Lake hosts the eighth grade commencement with about 325 graduates from across the county. Dr. Lowther will deliver the address as students receive diplomas in the auditorium, with many entering high school next fall. Names of graduates from Seward Lake, Clay and others are listed among the attendees.
Preaching at the M. E. church is canceled next Sunday due to the Lake township Sunday School convention here. Rev Butterbaugh will preach in the U. B. church and a large attendance is desired.
Chas. W. Shipley of north of Claypool received a telegram Saturday announcing the death of his sister Mrs. J. M. Chambers of Fort Worth Texas. Formerly Miss Alice Shipley she had resided in Silver Lake and had not been in serious health though her passing was unexpected.
Miss Ethel Shilling has entered college at Valparaiso. She attended school last winter and plans to teach again next winter.
In Chicago Monday Grover Arnold tried to enlist at the naval recruiting station but was rejected for failing weight specifications. He will be called with the next local group unless accepted later, otherwise he must enlist in the infantry.
A sizable audience attended memorial services last Sunday morning at the Lutheran church. Rev. A Z Fryberger led the ceremony with most of the remaining local Civil War veterans in attendance forenoon.
Lake township led the county by surpassing its Red Cross quota during the drive, raising 682.10 in cash subscriptions and pledges on day one and adding 34 more for the local chapter. The drive targets 3000 dollars in War Savings and Thrift Stamps this week as every township races to meet its share.
At the Commercial State bank monthly meeting Ernest Myers was chosen as assistant cashier to replace C R Jontz who will soon enter U S service. Myers will resign from Gemmer Store and begin his new duties Wednesday. Jontz, experienced and efficient, is draft age but a replacement is sought in advance.
Monday morning thirty one county young men were sent to Camp Taylor Kentucky to join the national army. It was the second largest delegation from this county. The group includes Sherman Hildenbrand Edward Herendeen Lloyd R Geiger.
Funeral services for Mrs Susanna Arnold of Goshen former Kosciusko county resident were held Saturday afternoon in Goshen. Widow of Amos Arnold she lived north of the area for years and died Thursday after a two year cancer illness. Survived by five sons and one daughter. Joel Arnold of near this place is among the sons.
Maynard Young accepted a position as clerk at the Gemmer store and began work Tuesday afternoon. He fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr. Myers.
Lake township Sunday School convention planned for the U B church next Sunday June 2 beginning 9 30 with a union session and sermon by Rev T D Butterbaugh. Afternoon program at 2 features addresses by Mr Adams Mr Kern and Rev J F Blocker.
The six sons Irvin Homer Hollis Dennis Mathew and Charles Alexander are called to Warsaw due to their mother’s serious illness, as reported by the family.
The American Red Cross established a training school at Winona Lake Indiana offering a six week course for students preparing for government or homework. The term runs July 8 through August 16.
Dr J M Amiss, secretary of the local board of health, traveled to Indianapolis on Tuesday to participate in the state meeting of health secretaries from cities and towns across Indiana.
Sherman Hildenbrand of near Slaney left the county Monday for Camp Taylor to begin weeks of training. He is a well known S L H S graduate. This makes the twelfth graduate from the school now in military service with more expected to be called soon.
Hovie Lowman returned home last Saturday after eight years away. He served in the U S Marines and traveled widely during his service. He was discharged some time ago for health reasons and is now back with his family.
Lake township calls for immediate purchase of War Saving and Thrift Stamps as a part of the war effort. Officials note last week’s Red Cross drive met its apportionment and urge residents to invest now, stressing four and a half percent interest and full cash value after ten days’ notice. Stamps priced at $4.16 each through May 31 with a $5 value, post office or solicitor sales encouraged.
Indiana will host Coal Week from June 3 to 8 as county fuel administrators were notified by State Administrator Wollen. Regulators outlined coal distribution and price rules for the state.
Prof. J D L Cline of this place passed the second division Life state examination on the latest sitting. The first division was completed years ago. State Board of Education conducts the exams annually and successful applicants receive a Life License. Licenses are valid in other states after countersignature.
Mrs A S Sprigg was called to Elk Hart Tuesday to the home of her daughter Mrs Lula Olds and remained a few days to assist in caring for a granddaughter born Monday night.
In a May 3 1918 letter from France Wilbur Miller says he is well busy with daily work and drills. He describes practicing baseball with little time to read about the war and notes the damp air affects his throat while weather has alternated between rain and sun.
Chester Bashore of Chicago has enlisted in the Signal Corps. He attends night school for seven weeks to prepare for service and then will answer Uncle Sam’s call.
Delbert Kerlin Beryle Rowland Anna Shepherd and Dorothy Wood entered college at North Manchester on Monday.
Mrs John Blue formerly Miss Alda Lukens visited the area on Wednesday to spend Decoration with friends. She lived here from childhood until a few years ago and is returning to reminisce.

Local businessmen convened at the town hall Monday to discuss selling War Saving and Thrift Stamps this week. Solicitors were chosen Tuesday and a canvas has begun. organizers hope to reach the quota and secure several hundred dollars for the drive.
