The town mourns Wilbur Jantz who died Monday at his Mishawaka home following spinal meningitis. A 25 year old son of Mr and Mrs A Jontz he was born here and lived with his family until ten years ago. Survived by parents three brothers and a sister and many relatives. Funeral held Wednesday with interment at Mishawaka cemetery.
The War Department cannot arm the new Army of 1,200,000 with Spring Field rifles. Building the required production machinery would take a year, delaying equipment for the troops to be raised for the war. Recruits may be ordered to drill with broomsticks in the meantime.
A large crowd from here up to Center attended the Union Sunday school and the Sunday school convention last Sunday. Many stayed all day and took their dinner.
Percy Walburn visited with his parents Mr and Mrs J W Walburn. He is presently employed in an undertaking establishment in South Bend and is getting along nicely.
Last Friday in Warsaw Archie Paul a four star driver with the Coop and Lent circus was killed after falling from a show wagon. An effort is under way to locate his relatives.
About ten days ago the assistant state fire marshal Mr Head of Plymouth visited the place and the Town Board of Silver Lake Indiana received a letter. The office recently assumed received numerous letters from citizens on file regarding various conditions.
Hon. J. E. Eschbach of Warsaw is tendered the appointment on state conscription to oversee the work statewide. Governor Goodrich stated Eschbach would accept the role as a patriotic duty.
Alvin Bowen and his wife left Tuesday for Niles Michigan where Bowen will work in a barber shop. They stored their household goods in the Summer rooms above the Myers store before leaving.
George Ply aged 51 a longtime printer at the Wabash Plain Dealer died from asphyxiation at his home in Wabash last Monday morning.
Large turnout in Lake township Sunday school convention at Center U B Church. H A Bryant presided, six Sunday schools represented, reports show class attendances and officer elections for next year. New officers include Hollis A Bryant president and Samuel Perry vice president with Bessie Carr as secretary treasurer.

A young gentleman, recently from the northwest, wandered Silver Lake after leaving a companion home. He was not sick but lost his way and, after asking directions, vanished around a corner. He had spent the winter in a large city and was visiting friends over Sunday, with his female companion on North Jefferson Street.
In Warsaw the county board of education named Frank W. Laird of Mentone to replace the outgoing truancy officer. His term just expired and the appointment was made Monday.
Reverend O L Rickhart departed Claypool on Wednesday to attend the General Conference of the United Brethren Church in Wichita Kansas. He expects to be away about ten days.
Due to the absence of Rev Rich hart, Rev J M Miller of Warsaw will lead Sunday services at the U B church. A large attendance is requested.
Elder Irvin Wisher of Mexico Indiana will preach Sunday May 13 at the Church of the Brethren two miles east in the morning and at the church five and a half miles east in the evening in missions work. A large crowd is urged for both services.
County officials plan the eighth grade commencement at the Winona Lake auditorium on Saturday June 2. Trustees will bring in Fred Landis of Logansport to deliver the address to about 260 graduates as part of a full program, with details still being arranged.
