Edson B Sarber county superintendent praises Silver Lake and surrounding schools. He commends teachers and pupils for excellent work and urges patrons to visit, observe recitations, and acknowledge the teachers’ efforts in character formation.
Francis Lamar plans a public sale at his farm southwest of town on Thursday March 14. He and his two sons and unmarried daughter will depart for Spokane Washington at month end to seek a new farming and stock raising site. Dorsey Clinker will occupy the farm this season during Lamar’s decision process.
Rev W H Rittenhouse of Syracuse and his daughter Hugenia and son Warne of Bourbon visited west of town for a day or two. He rented the farm to Arthur Hively for the coming year and abandoned plans to move there due to Syracuse work access.
The Knight of Pythias lodge will remodel the second story of the brick building they bought from T. J. Colbert last summer. They plan to raise the roof about five feet to add ventilation windows and create a comfortable lodge home on the rebuilt upper floor.
Miss Minnie Rhodes has been offered and accepted a position as clerk in the Swihart General Store and began work yesterday morning. Miss Mary Hamman has severed her connection with the store.
Election of officers held at the W. J. Fitton home after a Friday social. Elected were J. P. Hamman president Edna Wells vice president Georgie Leffel secretary Faun Kerlin treasurer Mable Jontz organist Ruth Burt chorister.
W L McMillen died at his daughter Mrs Bell Braden's home in Denver Colorado on Sunday March 5 at 2 o'clock Funeral held Tuesday March 7 in Denver He leaves a wife and three daughters Mesdames Braden Frazier of Denver and Mrs Smith Higgins of this place He was about 65 a Civil War veteran and had lived on a farm west of town for years He and his wife moved to Colorado last fall to stay with their daughter
The Joint Institute closed the school year with a morning session led by trustee Mr Leonard and two Shakespeare readings. Afternoon debate favored the affirmative on Monroe Doctrine repeal. judges selected and the motion to meet again next year carried.
A bashful young man from a neighboring town dines with his best girl. He forgets to comb his hair, spills coffee, and misreads a table cloth as a shirt, causing a family scene when the cloth pulls free and bricks fall. He exits abruptly and is said to be “still going.”

Dickey and Sons have closed their store and plan to move to Warsaw. Charles and Leonard Dickey are in Chicago this week buying a full new stock for the Warsaw store. Mr J T Dickey packed his household goods and left with his family for Warsaw.

Martin Hay of the east of town presented a 1848 tax receipt for 6.24 dollars covering state county road school and township taxes on the northwest quarter of section twelve. A second receipt from 1841 for 3.60 dollars paid on the east half of the southeast quarter of section thirteen and northwest quarter of section thirteen bears Mahlon F. Davis's signature.
W C McCoy traded his Col bert stock for two houses in Fairmount and will move goods to J H Wilson’s home town. Ernest Haney runs the store until Wilson arrives next week to relocate stock. Real estate men Scott of Fairmount and Stauffer of Goshen arranged the deal. McCoy left for Elkhart after the transfer.
Mrs. Retha Landis Thacker of Silver Lake born July 26 1877 died March 1 1905 at home aged 27 years 7 months and 5 days. She married Albert Thacker December 1 1900 and left two sons Carl and Donald and stepdaughter Nellie. The large U B church funeral featured Rev D A Hopkins and ended at Lakeview cemetery with many floral tributes from the D of B lodge and others.
The Ladies Aid of the M E church met at Mrs. Self’s home on March 1 to comfort attendees and elect officers for the coming year. The financial report was very gratifying and all ladies are urged to attend each Wednesday afternoon after preaching. President Mrs. A E Sarah. Vice President Mrs. A Sprigg. Secretary Mrs. Self. Treasurer Mrs. A Ferree.
Statistics from the Santa Fe system show 400 stations between Chicago and the Pacific coast host gum slot machines packed with pennies. Last year 1,150,000 coins were dropped into the gum machines, totaling 311,500 dollars in value.
Miss Ina Leckrone entertained the One Dozen Club on Thursday evening at Joe Hinsey's home. The usual social features followed by light refreshments. Revival services at the Center church closed last Sunday night. Rev Butler will begin a series of meetings in Packerton on next Sunday evening.
The Silver Lake M E Circuit holds its quarterly meeting at the Methodist church on Saturday and Sunday March 11 and 12. Preaching on Saturday evening and Sunday at 10 a m and 7 20 p m with a quarterly conference on Monday at 2 p m.
The Y P C U social at the home of Mr and Mrs W J Fitton last Friday evening was well attended and a neat sum was realized.
Notification that the Sunday evening program at the Y P C U held in the U S church reached the paper too late for publication.

R. M. Jontz who has cler ked in a Disko store for a year will move to our town as Swihart Store clerk. He and his family once lived here and are welcomed back.
John Craig of Rochester moved his family and household goods onto the farm west of town recently vacated by John Miller. He was aided by Rev. O B Wells who stayed with his father during his visit.
The examination for eighth grade pupils to win county diplomas will be held next Saturday in the high school building. A large class is expected with many schools represented and students aiming for graduation this spring. Those not successful on March 18 may try again on April 21.
Rooms over the Central drug store are being remodeled and fitted up for office use by Dr. Leckrone in the near future.
