Kitty endures confinement in a strange room with bars and a high window while allies and enemies maneuver. A hidden coin and a cryptic message drive hope as Rolan and Count Sachie pursue her captors, and Count Frederick schemes against the king to reclaim the coin.
Kitty studies exits in a locked room as Count Sachie taunts her about returning to America. She resists deceit and contemplates escape using a hairpin, hoping to flee to her homeland and reclaim her place in the city newsroom. The scene ends with another door creaking and her decision pending.
In Chapter XXVII The Counterfeit Coin Count Frederick shakes off apathy after Kitty’s sudden disappearance. His renewed determination shifts the pursuit and unsettles the surrounding figures as intrigue deepens.
