Cities and towns display Old Glory in business places homes and cars. Officials issue proclamations urging citizens to show patriotism by flying the flag at their residences and public spaces during the crisis.
M. Jaques received a letter Tuesday from J. W. Rhine of Charleston Missouri stating he and Mrs Rhine intend to travel to a Battle Creek Michigan sanitarium for treatment immediately after Easter. The Rhine couple lived here years ago and were well known by longtime residents.
A sizable crowd attended the public auction held last Saturday by the F. F. Hardware Company, with bidders bidding on implements and related items.
Mrs I U Snobereer hosted a reading club gathering Monday evening with club members in attendance. The event featured discussion of selected works and light refreshments.
Members of the embroidery club were entertained last Friday after noon by Mrs. W. W. Homman. The social gathering featured conversation and light refreshments in a community setting.
Mr and Mrs A Snoberger Mr and Mrs D F Hamman Mr and Mrs F D Hayman Mr and Mrs J W Ferrerda Mr and Mrs H P Rager and Mr and Mrs R H Hanes attended a Tuesday evening party in North Manchester hosted by Mr and Mrs E W Gresso.
Charles Young and wife entertained many young guests Tuesday evening at their home for Maynard Youngs birthday and in honor of his sister Mrs Austa Haldeman. The evening featured readings piano and violin music with drums and traps. A luncheon followed by a social hour.
Arthur Flively of the west side has started a milk route delivering milk in town each morning. He is building a growing trade and aims to serve all customers who use milk.
Mrs Elizabeth Hively and her daughter Mrs J S March returned from Chicago to Akron following the death of her brother John Aukermap at his Akron home Sunday. Her husband accompanied them.
Discussion spreads on convening Silver Lake business association to buy mile posts and install markers at crossroads just outside town similar to practice in other towns.
Mr. and Mrs. Grover Huffman of Lakeville are the parents of an eight pound son born on March 25. Mrs. Huffman is the daughter of Noah Shireman and lived here until a couple of years ago.
Theodore Penn and wife have moved back from Marion and are living with their daughter Mrs. Marshall and family near Rose Hill.
Workers began digging trenches Monday for the Braude packing house foundation on West Main Street. By Tuesday the concrete mixer was running, cement and stone laid in the trenches, and masonry to follow. The 40 by 82 foot structure will house Braude's poultry and egg business with the existing building used for a creamery and office. After completion, poultry dressing and packing will continue year round.
Emery Shutt attended a Tuesday night IOOF Lodge roll call meeting and spent several hours with his aunt and uncle, both seriously ill and in critical condition.
Mr and Mrs L O Isley of the southeast district visited their son Otis in a South Bend hospital where he has been ill for weeks with rheumatism He was reported very low but latest word said he was much improved after the family rushed to his bedside
Notice invites farmers and others to a lecture in Lake township at the M E church on Tuesday afternoon April tenth. Mr Smalley the Angola Indiana agriculture agent will discuss Pig Clubs and their usefulness and how to boost hog production and profits in Indiana. The program, under the Boys Equity Pig Club of Silver Lake grammar room, aims to engage boys and adults in improving farming.
Real estate owners with mortgages must file an affidavit during March or April to claim a fifty percent exemption on pre mortgaged real estate up to seven hundred dollars. Brush & Hanson offer the necessary blanks and will file with the proper official at no extra charge.
Dr J C Hay attended the Chicago dental association meeting last Thursday and Friday. He visited his son Edward who is enrolled in dental college during the trip.
Estate of the late Charles Wittrout will be offered for sale by administrator W H Kern at Commercial State Bank on Saturday April 7 between 2 and 4 pm. The sale promises a good dwelling and opportunity for buyers.
The RECORD announces the serial Prudence will end this week and introduces a new feature titled The Real Adventure starting in the April 12 issue. It promises a big, brilliant story about real people with real emotions and problems that affect all readers.
Indianapolis April 4 1917 Brush Hanson Silver Lake announces six Ford cars arrived from Indianapolis and two from Chicago with plans to obtain twelve. Readers will be notified by phone or given some notification as their turn comes, indicating they are twenty cars nearer than a few days ago and the writer promises to do their best to secure more.
Akron pastor Rev. H. M. Riggle will preach Sunday afternoon in the county room. All are invited to attend.
Mrs. Epb Drudge residing south of town has been suffering from rheumatism for a couple of weeks and has been unable to walk. At latest report she was somewhat improved. It is hoped that she will soon fully recover.
Mrs. William West returned to her home in Angola after a year of caring for her aunt Mrs. Mary Sigler. She plans to remain there indefinitely.
The annual M E conference ended in Huntington with large attendance and strong sermons. A partial list of assignments includes Fort Wayne First A G Neal Harlan E Wright Akron R I Goodwin and others. 1918 conference planned for Warsaw.
A dog purchased by Grover Arnold and James Harter in Arkansas last fall was struck by a automobile Tuesday. The left hind leg fractured and a veterinarian attended to the injury.
The Silver Lake school plan to close next Tuesday with a grammer room farewell dinner for about forty guests. The bill of fare includes buns butter jelly pressed meat fried ham chicken baked beans potato chips potato salad peanut butter pickled eggs deviled eggs cottage cheese fruit salad olives cookies cakes pies bananas oranges whipped cream lemonade ice cream.
Many attended the play last Friday night in Halley town. Members of the domestic science class at Silver Lake High School performed well and earned compliments from all.
Mrs Saloma Myers, residing southwest of here, has been quite seriously ill for the past several weeks. The notice notes her illness and location with terse, local phrasing.
In-progress services at the Lutheran church are nearing their conclusion this Sunday evening. Rev. Fryberger has delivered strong sermons during Passion Week and invites those not yet attending to join tonight and stay for the remainder. Prof and Mrs Stratton lead a booster choir with children singing, a treat to hear. Sunday morning will feature a member reception followed by communion. all are invited.
Mrs Myrtle Baker of Warsaw attended the funeral of Mrs L D Keller here last Friday. She was formerly Miss Myrtle Keller, daughter of Mr and Mrs Michael Keller who lived in this town years ago. She stayed until Sunday evening visiting friends.
John Aukerman died at his Akron home Sunday from pneumonia after years of ill health. He was 85 years old, with 8 months and 4 days. Survived by his wife, two brothers Henry of Plymouth and William of Kansas, and sister Mrs. Elizabeth Hively of this place. Mrs Aukerman is gravely ill.
A party including Wade Whittenberger Bill Whitten berger Jacob W Metzger Mell Min ear Prof Homer Lucas and Frank Sanders passed through here Saturday evening en route to Claypool with six new Fords. They followed the Dixie Highway from Indiana polis.
Charles R Linn and Clara R Drudge both of Claypool were married in Warsaw last Saturday. The bride is the daughter of John Drudge and the groom the son of Thomas Linn. They plan to reside in Claypool.
W H Kern has been appointed administrator of the estate of Rose Ann McMillan, deceased, late of this community. Notice is published elsewhere in this issue.
Next Sunday morning preaching services at the M. E. B. church will feature the minister assigned to this charge delivering his initial sermon for the conference year.
