Bill Saffold to Speak at Cargo Tourism Conference

Eight Traffic Fatalities Reported in New Mexico Crash Near Eunice

A two car head on collision on New Mexico 18 south of Eunice Monday night killed Juan Benavidez Sorola 46 and Gomecinda Lopez Sorola 58 of Vaughn and John Wesley Garrett 47 of Jal. The crash, which occurred on a two lane highway without center stripe, involved a Hobbs car carrying four passengers that was not injured except for two riders with injuries.

Pentagon orders record low draft call for November

Washington reports the Pentagon requests 10,000 inductees for next November, the lowest draft call since March 1965. Selective Service System notes pulls reflect fewer men leaving service in coming months, with October set at 13,800 and September at 12,200. All 10,000 will be assigned to the Army.

Jose Ojinaga 53 dies in California rites held in La Puente

Jose R. Ojinaga, 53, died at Veterans Hospital in Long Beach, California. A Grant County native, he long resided there before moving to Long Beach. German Student Joins Silver High Through AFS Exchange

Peter Stemmerich of Bevergern Germany joins Silver High School as an American Field Service exchange student. He comes from a seven member family, attends Rheine Gymnasium, and learned of the AFS program via a Hamburg article. Four of fifteen applicants were chosen, with Stemmerich arriving in New York Aug 12 and Silver City Aug 14 after papers from Münster.

Sheriff and Police Have Average Labor Day Weekend

Grant County Sheriff’s Office answered 31 calls from Friday noon to Monday midnight. Shiver City Police Department logged 15 calls in the same period. Accidents were lower than usual, with the sheriff reporting five incidents no serious injuries and the police one minor collision. Other calls involved skunks, vandalism, dog trouble and runaways. Sheriff Steve Ray Aguirre credited cautious driving for fewer crashes.

Airline schedule hearing on Ranger Airlines permit

The New Mexico State Corporation Commission will hold a hearing to grant a permit for Ranger Airlines to operate scheduled air service between Silver City and El Paso. The meeting is set for Wednesday, September 1 at 10 a.m. in the Grant County Bank Silver City office meeting room.
