Silver City Council notes sound water system as bids opened

The Silver City Town Council opened three bids for a new bulldozer and two bids for refuse collection. Border Machinery offered 19292.80 for a Caterpillar dozer, Neil Wiggins Company 19324.90 for an Allis-Chalmers, Russ Tractor 21520 for a Caterpillar from Albuquerque. Water system review praised by Day ton Molzen with recommendations to enlarge pipes and maintain an engineering map. Council approved signing an architectural contract for the police and fire building and announced paving bid advertisements for Pav ing Project 10 with bids opening Sept 6 at 1 30 p m. A request from Silver High Booster Club to pave gutters and walkways around the high school will be studied. Next meeting set for Sept 3 at 7 p m.

Johnson Declines Pressure for Hanoi Deescalation Offer

President Johnson told the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Detroit that the United States will not move further toward peace until Hanoi signals genuine willingness to end the fighting. He warned critics in his party and said the next move must come from North Vietnam. He denounced Hanoi for not responding to his March bombing order and defended continuing actions until a real de escalation is evident.

George Carter Dies In Accidental Death

George P Purge Carter dies in an automobile accident in Boston Massachusetts. He was a longtime resident of Fort Bayard before moving to California ten years ago. Relatives in the Silver City area are advised. Funeral services are pending at the Peeks Family Mortuary in Westminster Cane.

Thieu Plans US Visit After Election

Saigon reports President Thieu intends to visit the United States between the presidential election and year end. He aims to fulfill Johnson's invitation and has postponed the trip twice, with plans for Washington New York and San Francisco if schedules permit in November or December.

Plot of assassination plot at Democratic convention reported

Chicago Tribune on Tuesday said FBI and Secret Service investigate a plan to assassinate Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey and Senator Eugene McCarthy. The plot allegedly formed at a meeting of about 100 Negro extremists and South Side gang members and included plans to destroy police stations with explosives and rifle fire. The U S attorney general's office reportedly approved a full case probe to gather enough facts for conspiracy warrants.
