Cerrillos residents protest experimental copper mine

A Santa Fe County group petitioned Gov. Jerry Apodaca to halt Occidental Minerals experimental copper mining near Cerrillos. He ordered state agencies to study the Rocky Mountain Center on Environment report and assess water safety, blasting, and environmental impact before proceeding.

Valuable State Documents Returned to New Mexico Governor

A Philadelphia woman presented Gov. Jarry Apodaca with 57 state archives documents missing for nearly a century. Alice Scoville Barry found them in a trunk of family letters, dating from 1684 to 1863, including a military order tied to Mangus Colorado. A museum official praised their scholarly value. Barry sought proper restitution after two decades of searching.

Japanese Seaman Arrested In Pistol Sale Ring Near Atsugi

Seaman 2.c. Franklin Rodriguez, 26, assigned to Atsugi Naval Air Base, was arrested by Japanese police for allegedly selling navy pistols to a Japanese gang, priced at $800 each. Police said others tied to the gang were also arrested. Rodriguez allegedly stole the pistols from the base arsenal in the second week of April.

Archbishop Sanchex to Celebrate Mass in Albuquerque

Archbishop Robert Sanchex will celebrate a mass at Assumption Church in Albuquerque honoring 41 priests and three brothers who have served the Catholic Church for 30 years or more. The event marks the first of its kind in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, according to spokesmen.

The New Mexico Supreme Court upheld Royal Optical Co in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, affirming Royal’s prior right to the trade name Texas Optical in the state. Texas State Optical challenged the decision, arguing risk of confusion with Royal, while Royal’s stores in other states use different branding.
