Recounts Ordered In Three County Senatorial Race

The Associated Press reports recounts ordered in Hidalgo Sierra and Luna counties to resolve a tight New Mexico Senate Democratic primary. Sen I M Smalley led 1926 to 1924 over R H Bud ay Wamel amid calls for paper ballots and machine readouts with each man paying 10 per box to be recounted. The Hidalgo tally is to begin Friday and Sierra Monday with Luna not yet finalized.

AP reports Gemini 9 mission delays due to a last minute radio reay failure. Cernan and Stafford faced a second postponement as guidance signals failed to reach the Titan 2 rocket, delaying the first attempt to rendezvous with an Agena target satellite.

July 4 Celebration Fund Drive Appeals For Support

An appeal for funds to finance Grant County Fourth of July celebrations was launched by Hugh Hawkins and Betty Biggs. The event runs July 1 to July 4 with rodeos, concerts, parades, an air show, fireworks, dances, art, and more. The parade on July 2 features regional groups and the U S Marine Color Guard. Last year’s cost was 3150. this year’s about 4000, covering meals and lodging for visitors, fireworks, prizes, and ads. Community donations are encouraged from businesses and individuals.

Ron Hansen sidelined for season with ruptured disc

Chicago White Sox shortstop Ron Hansen will miss the rest of the season after suffering a ruptured spinal disc and needing surgery. Hansen, 28, injured his ankle opening day, played through increasing pain, and left the lineup May 14. Rookie Lee Elia recalled. Wayne Causey acquired to bolster infield depth.

Forest Fires Put Out In Gila Tuesday

Tuesday reports from the Gila National Forest described fifteen small fires scattered mainly in the San Francisco Reserve and Glenwood districts. All were extinguished by Wednesday morning with one blaze near O Bar O Mountain requiring slurry drops from aircraft. No size figures were available at 10 40 am Wednesday. Planes also dropped slurry on two fires in the Apache National Forest Tuesday.

Summer School Begins June 13 At Silver High

Summer class registration starts Monday June 13 at 8 am at Silver High School. Classes begin 8 am the next day with recitations from 8 to 12:65, resume at 1 pm and end at 2:55 pm. Semester tests June 24, July 4 holiday, final exams in July. Tuition due at registration, no refunds after June 24. tardiness and two days absence lead to drops with no makeup. Courses limited to offered subjects. half credit $15, full credit $25, driver training $20.

Girl to Sleep Therapy After 22 Weeks of Sneezing

June Clark, 17, has suffered persistent sneezing since January. Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital plan sleep therapy to alter her reflexes after a 22 week history, aiming to end the sneezing when she awakens in a few days. The central nervous system is blamed for the condition. The patient entered the hospital May 21 after attempts including a trip to Arizona.
