Christmas Truce Looms Amid North Vietnam Raids

U S and South Vietnamese troops prepare for a 30 hour Christmas truce as fighting persists with a 50 plane raid on Uong Bi power plant. Allied forces claim 90 Viet Cong killed in ground clashes while two A4 Skyhawks and a Vigilante recon aircraft are shot down. Despite the plan, observers note no guaranteed Communist response to the truce and no air raids expected during the lull.

WNMU Receives Work Study Grant for Spring

Western New Mexico University will continue in a college work study program through the spring semester. A telegram from New Mexico's congressional delegation says WNMU was granted 22,766 dollars to aid 95 students, part of the war on poverty funding for needy students.

Weather update with mixed clouds and cool temperatures

Fragmented forecast notes show varying terms snow furries or showers today then clearing and colder. Highs around 43 to 48 and overnight near 23 to 28, with Friday near 45. Airport reading lists 45 high and 38 low with some precipitation.

Sun Princess Introduced to Chamber of Commerce

Miss Nicolyn Menefee daughter of Mrs Clyde Menefee and the El Paso Sun Carnival Sun Princess attended the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Bettty Biggs presided as chamber manager. Menefee thanked the chamber for sponsoring her appearance and said she would have a full round of activities during the Sun Carnival which begins in El Paso December 26 and ends January 1. Mrs Higgs summarized chamber accomplishments and merchants holiday sales. The chamber will skip the Christmas week luncheon. next meeting is January 5.

Hurley Kiwanis Spread Holiday Cheer To Needy

Thirteen Hurley Kiwanis members provided Christmas meals to ten needy families in the Mine Mill area delivering turkey boxes with milk eggs bread canned goods and party extras despite fog and rain. Klingler Dies In U S 180 Crash In New Mexico

Richard A. Klingler 50 fire chief at Cliff was killed when a northbound car struck a truck on U S Highway 180 about 20 miles west of Silver City. Deputy Carl Rice investigated. An inquest was held at Curtis Mortuary, with funeral arrangements pending.

Santa Rita Yule Lighting Contest Winners Named

Winners in the Santa Rita Christmas Lighting Contest were announced today by judges Bill Frazier and Lino Grijalva. In the large decorations section Richard Torrez won first with 25 dollars, O D McMullen took 15, Louis Delgado 10. In the small decorations section Mike Ojinaga won 25, Mike Logano 16, Pete Garcia 10.

Jose B. Madrid Dies At His Home Here This Morning

Jose B. Madrid age 71, a miner with U. S. Mining and Georgetown Mining Companys, died at his home this morning. He is survived by his widow Rosa W. Madrid, six sons and seven daughters, plus 41 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Siblings live in California and Arizona. Funeral arrangements are pending with Curtis Mortuary of Silver City.

Scientists plan air study of rare gas to probe rain now

Socorro AP Scientists at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology will fly aircraft next summer to study a rare radioactive gas as researchers seek to understand what causes rain. The project is funded by a 962,100 grant from the National Science Foundation.
