GIs Charged With Aiding Reds After VC Release
NAHA Okinawa AP The US Army charged two GIs with aiding the enemy during Viet Cong imprisonment. Sgt George E Smith and Winson Spere Cloude of Chattardoga Tenn were released by the Viet Cong last month and now await court martial or further action on Okinawa. They allegedly furnished documents and writings harmful to the United States after capture in November 1963. Defense attorneys are provided as cases are studied for trial. Smith 27 and McClure 25 were captured near Saigon and released at the Cambodian border amid antiwar demonstrations. They were flown to Bangkok then Okinawa after a Phnom Penh stay. They denied to reporters selling a campaign against the war and claimed their remarks were misinterpreted.

The National Safety Council warned 80 million vehicles were on the roads amid rain and ice, with several crashes causing dozens of deaths including a bus rollover in Oregon and multiple fatalities on icy bridges. The tally surpassed the 1964 weekend and approached 1956 four day totals.
