Trial Delays Verdict In Bowles Murder Case

In Kountze 88th District Court jurors remained deliberating at 4 p.m. after hearing closing arguments in the murder trial of Mrs Elma Lois Bowles wife of Bryant Bowles. Prosecutors had charged her as a principal with aiding in the May 4 shooting of James Earl Harvey on his Loeb porch. Harvey was killed by a shotgun blast while on his porch. Bowles previously sentenced to life for the killing of Harvey’s brother in law Jimmy Mitchell. Bowles' wife faced an indictment as principal. Jurors selected included Sam Hughes Melvin Cole G H Easley Roy L Kendrick D C Grisham J L Stiles L D Collins and more. death penalty not qualified.

Final Rites Are Held This Week For Two Area Men Killed In Saturday Auto Crash

Two area men, John Edward Rawls Jr. of Silsbee and Jeff A. Parks of Port Arthur, died in a two vehicle crash six miles north of Silsbee around 12:30 a m Saturday. Robert Lee Henderson of Groves was injured and later treated at Baptist hospital. Rawls and Parks had services this week with burial in local cemeteries.

Construction of New Country Club Facilities Begins

Construction on the new $22,000 addition at Silsbee Golf and Country Club began this week. Southern Building and Construction Company of Silsbee was the low bidder. A lounge, ballroom and kitchen will be added to the present pro shop, expanding golf club facilities.

Silsbee Citizens Involved In Auto Collisions

Several Silsbee residents were in two recent traffic crashes. Seven youths and adults from Silsbee sustained minor injuries in a 69 highway crash two miles north of Loeb. all were treated and released from Baptist hospital. A second wreck on North 18th Street involved Claud Gray and Lamar Tech student passengers from Silsbee. another car struck the Darby vehicle after the tractor collision.

Grand Jury Indicts Seven in Hardin County District Court

Hardin county grand jurors returned seven indictments to 88th district court on Oct. 20. Wil lis Selman the district clerk noted five pleas of guilty since Oct. 6. Defendants included Frank Al brow George Atkins Clarence Russell all from Sour Lake who received two year probation for burglary. L. C. Laman got two years probation for obtaining valuables with a worthless check. S. J. Gall also received two years probation for child desertion.

Methodist Group To Aid UNICEF On Halloween

The Intermediate MYF of the First Methodist Church plans a Friday 5:30 meeting to door to door collect for UNICEF the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund aiding underprivileged children. Their motto is The Trick is to Treat with donations directed to this purpose. Mrs. Pat Beard sponsors the group.

Mrs. Pryor showed two films from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, In Visible Receptionist and Civilian Defense, highlighting the part of the telephone. The next meeting will be a business session on November 13.

Trespassers And Squirrel Hunters Are Fined Here

Four men paid fines in Judge Louis Sellers court in Silsbee for game law and trespass violations. Wayne Craft and T. J. Ward were fined 25 dollars and costs for trespassing on land leased to East Texas Wildlife Conservation Association. Jack Edward Gore and Henry Richard Yawn were fined 25 dollars and costs for killing or hunting squirrels in closed season. All arrests were by Game Warden E. B. Williams.

Local Youth Hit by Accidental Gunshot Wound

Virgil Mock 17 son of Mr and Mrs Britton Mock of Silsbee suffered a serious leg wound Tuesday night when he fell on the steps entering his home and the shotgun he carried discharged. He was taken to Parker and Copeland clinic in Silsbee for emergency care by Dr Sam Copeland and then to Baptist hospital in Beaumont by a Farmer Funeral Home ambulance.

Local Girl Burns In Flash Fire Saturday Afternoon

Ann Hayes 14 daughter of Mr and Mrs Bob Hayes sustained burns on arms and a leg when naptha used to clean the kitchen floor flashed into flame Saturday afternoon. She carried the blazing pan to the carport preventing greater danger. The Hayes home suffered no fire damage, according to Mr Hayes.

A Saturday preview parade at 2 p.m. near Neches Minimax leads to an 8 p.m. downtown stage show at the high school auditorium. Off icers Jail 26 In Week 24 Drunks

County law enforcement officers jailed 26 persons last week as reported by Deputy Dave Rountree. Arrests included 24 drunks, one traffic violator, and one affray. One Hardin county man, Robert Lee Smart, 45, of Kountee, was charged Oct. 73 in Beay ant with driving while intoxicated.
