New County CC Head Russell Allen Installed as Chamber President

Russell S. Allen of Sour Lake was installed as president of the Greater Hardin County Chamber of Commerce at the annual banquet held at the junior high school cafeteria. Gordon Turrentine of the Houston Chamber spoke, with C. E. Meadows elected first vice president and A. F. Johnson and Russell Allen named second vice president and third vice president respectively. E. L. Stankard served as secretary and Mrs. Laura Mitchell as treasurer.

Earl Stover Named Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis Division 10

Earl B. Smokey Stover of Silsbee Hardin County county attorney and Silsbee Kiwanis Club president was unanimously elected lieutenant governor Division 10 Texas Oklahoma District Kiwanis International. The Division 10 area includes Beaumont Port Arthur Orange Cleveland and Silsbee with the next governor Cotton Clover of Odessa.

United Appeals of Hardin County Extends Drive One Week

The United Appeals of Hardin County extends its 1959 fund drive to October 16 to finish eight agency campaigns including Boy Scouts Red Cross Salvation Army and Muscular Dystrophy. Frank R Grote to Speak at Texas Forestry Meeting in Tyler

Frank R. Grote of Kirby Lumber will headline the 44th Annual Texas Forestry Association meeting in Tyler at the Carlton Hotel on October 24. He will discuss Safety and the Small Wood Producer. The group will consider right of way purchases and a bond issue for county bridge approaches including Evadale river bridge.

John Clawson Heads Junior High Student Body

John Clawson, a ninth grader, was elected president of the junior high student body. Other officers include Margaret Scoggins as vice president and Beth Singletary as secretary. Eighth and seventh grade officers are listed with presidents, vice presidents, and secretaries.

Good Shepherd Baptists Form Youth Program

The Good Shepherd Baptist Church creates a youth program for ages 13 to 18. Adult leaders are Mr and Mrs H E Moore and Mr and Mrs James Skinner. Former Resident Is Buried In Liberty Saturday

Funeral services for Mrs. Dittie Ola Havens, 63, longtime Liberty resident and former Silsbee resident, were held at 2 p m Saturday at the First Baptist church of Liberty. She died Thursday in a Liberty hospital after a lengthy illness. Native of Woodville, she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. Survived by two daughters, one brother, one sister, one niece and four grandchildren. Pallbearers included Dr. W C McNeil and C A Miles among others.

Tax Assessor Scolds Judge Over Sick Leave Pay Dispute

Mrs. Lillie Bell Collier county tax assessor denounced County Judge Fletcher Richardson during a Monday session over docking pay for her deputy Mrs. Jeanette Morgan for ten sick days. The dispute centered on legality and consistency with other offices as county officials sought an attorney general opinion before any decision.

Increased Social Security Checks Due In February

Social security beneficiaries will see higher payments automatically in February. Carlton Touchet of the Beaumont Social Security Office says no action is needed by recipients. Minimum rises to 33.00 and maximum to 116.00, while family maximum jumps from 200.00 to 254.00.

E. J. Vickers 82 Dies In Uvalde Funeral Thursday

E. J. Vickers known as Uncle Bud, 82, long-time Silsbee resident, died at 11:30 Wednesday after hospital stay in Beaumont and Uvalde where two sons live. Graveside service set for Thursday at 4 p.m. in Kirbyville with Conner-Frazer Funeral Home of Uvalde directing. Two Men Sentenced to Probation in Kountze Court

In 88th District Court in Kountze, L. C. Latham of Borger received a two year probation for using a worthless check to defraud and restitution of $206.32 was ordered. S. J. Gall of Victor was placed on two years probation after pleading guilty to child desertion and was ordered to pay $250 past due child support plus $35 monthly.

Silsbee Business and Professional Women's Club met last Thursday and heard from Mrs Kay Magee about the finance committee program for the coming year. Two dances are set for February 14 and April 4. A rummage sale is planned for November 1 at City Park.

Sherry Hinkel Set for Weeks-Long France Visit

Sherry Hinkel left last week to visit her father Lt. Col. C. B. Hinkel in Fontainbleau France. She will tour London Paris Germany England Belgium and see the Brussels World's Fair. On November 4 she sails from Genoa Italy aboard the USS Constitution and plans to return to New York December 20 with her father accompanying her to Harlingen Texas where he is stationed with the air force.

Miscreants Fined In County Court On Guilty Pleas

Judge Fletcher Richardson’s county court fined several defendants after guilty pleas. Robert Dean paid 25 dollars on October 9 for driving with license suspended, Jess Harvill and Thand Hopkins the same on October 11. McGee received 50 dollars and three days in jail for drunken driving. Calacote paid 100 dollars for carrying a pistol on October 11. Arrest reports list jail counts and Beaumont-combined arrests for the week.

Sorority Collecting Old Toys for Community Baskets
