Batson Man Receives UA Service Award at 1959 Kickoff

Robert Yust of Batson won the Community Service award for leading Batson in the 1958 United Appeals drive. The kickoff dinner in Kountze featured Clark Allen presenting, with E L Robinson and Dr Louis Thacker among speakers.

Dan J. Lewis Rites Held in Silsbee

Last rites were held Saturday at First Baptist Church for Dan J. Lewis a long time Silsbee resident who died Thursday at Santa Fe Hospital Temple. He retired after forty years as a boilermaker for the Santa Fe Railroad and was WWI veteran active in American Legion Silsbee Lodge 927 A F and A M El Mina Shrine Woodmen of the World. Surviving: his wife Mrs Dan Lewis a daughter Mrs Billy Jeannette Holmes two grandchildren Donna and Ben Holmes two brothers Dave and Robert Lewis four sisters Mrs Cora Tatman Mrs Susie Kessinger Mrs Alice Stalewski Mrs Annie Ramsey. Local Firm Wins Lift Station Contract Award

The city council awarded a lift station contract for the sewer system improvements to Southern Building and Construction Co. of Silsbee as the lowest bid at 10 200. Second bid came from Lester Fredricks of Houston at 11 128 and Texala Construction Co. of Houston at 15 000.

Mrs. C. B. Bass To Install WMU Officers

The WMU of the First Baptist Church will install officers Thursday night in the church recreational hall. A 7 o clock covered dish luncheon will be served. Mrs. C. B. Bass, formerly of Silsbee and now of Anahudee, will be the installing officer.

Bee football contest crowns 12 perfect picks

The Bee drew 76 entrants for its football contest last week. Joe Green led with 11 correct picks among 12 winners, followed by Clifford Wells in second and Hilliard G. Lewis in third. Seventeen players had 10 correct outcomes as season analysis grows sharper.

Silsbee Duo Earns Weekly Honors for Port Acres Game

Marvin Gordon and Billy Barclay won honors as outstanding lineman and back of the week. Barclay scored both touchdowns for the Ti ger eleven against Port Acres last Friday. Gordon completed a pass and anchored Silsbee's defense as they beat Port Acres 14 to 0.

Botanists from Silsbee publish Bible plant guide

Silsbee residents Mrs. Bessie M. Reid and Mrs. Velma Jackson coauthored Plants of the Holy Land with Mrs. Eula F. Brown and Mrs. Maud M. McDonald. The book links biblical plants to East Texas flora and aims to encourage church grounds to plant them.

Tank Truck Fire Injures Two Near Kirbyville

A J Wiggins 45 and Charlie Poole 50 escaped a fiery tank truck crash on Highway 92 near Kirby Elementary. The Shaw Transport crude oil vehicle jack-knifed as a school bus approached, sparking flames as firemen used a new foamite chemical to douse the blaze. both men were treated for second degree burns and released.

Centennial crowds swell Kountze parade and pageant

The Hardin County centennial in Kountze drew huge crowds for the Saturday parade and night pageant. Miss Jackie Bennett of Sour Lake was crowned Miss Hardin County, with Chester the TV figure and Archer Fullingham's history pageant as highlights. Beard contests, a last draw contest, and a football win by Kountze over Woodville accompanied the festivities. Roy Harris of Cut N Shoot was introduced at the pageant.

Village Mills Man Jailed on Rape Charge

Charges of statutory rape were filed in Justice Bernice Seale's court in Kountze against Roy Fondren 45 of Village Mills. He faced a similar charge in Jefferson County jail in Beaumont for an alleged offense against the same child.

Day Couple to Observe Golden Wedding Anniversary

Boykin Heads Hardin County Texas Teachers Unit

Supt J W Boykin of the Chance Loeb School is elected president of the Hardin County local of the Texas State Teachers Association. The first meeting of the year is set for Monday October 20 at 7 PM at Camp Wilburf. He asks all county teachers to attend to build a top unit in the state.

First Graders To Ride Fire Truck During Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week activities in Silsbee include an open house at the fire station Monday night from to 9 p m and a ride for first graders in all Silsbee schools on Tuesday. Fire Chief John Busby says equipment will be displayed and explained and an ice cream treat will be served. A fire truck will visit every elementary school and riding is offered to all first graders present.

Sunday Golf Tourney At Silsbee Club Winners Named

Thirty local men and women golfers entered the mixed two ball foursome event at Silsbee Golf and Country Club last Sunday afternoon. First place went to Mrs Bruce Watts Jr and Billy Dinkle, with Mrs George Wright and J C Perkins second. In Tuesday's ladies day tournament Mrs Barney McMahon won and Mrs John Spiller was runner up.

Sheila Donalson to Represent Silsbee at Port Arthur Event

Miss Sheila Donalson, Silsbee high school sophomore and former Miss Silsbee, will represent Silsbee in the Cave Oil-Cade observance at Port Arthur October 16 to 19. The selection was announced by Carl Para ee and notes her prior role as Silsbee’s Hardin County Centennial representative.

Cemetery Work Day at Cunningham Cemetery

All interested persons will gather at Cunningham cemetery Saturday with tools to clean the ground. The cemetery lies 14 miles north of Silsbee. A basket lunch will be served at noon. This is an annual affair though weather may affect the original September date.
