Santa Claus arrives in Silsbee for ten days of holiday appearances. He will tour Saturday mornings starting November 29 at 10 with citywide routes, then stay through December 24 with daily afternoon visits and planned stops at city park and south end. Merchants sponsor extended visits for local children.
Three organizations sponsor the Community Christmas Basket fund in Silsbee for needy families. Thos E. Bell is general chairman with Kir B Co Kirby Lumber Eustex Supervisors East Texas Pulp and Paper and Beta Sigma Phi as partners. Members of Kiwanis Key Club assist in assembly with Weeks Crawford heading the investigations committee and E J Dietrich supervising the fund raising. Donations of canned goods staples toys or cash are welcome as the drive officially begins. Last year two baskets were distributed to families in the area.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the First Baptist church in Silsbee for Claude Collier 53 who died Sunday night at John Sealy hospital Galveston. He was a field representative for Kirby Lumber Corp native of Hardin County survived by his wife Sue Collier two sisters Mrs Eunice Byerly of Jasper and Mrs Bertha Hall of Silsbee Pallbearers named Zack Taylor Darrell D Shine Bill Hilliard George Hart Earnest Hutto Wade Davis Burial followed in Resthaven cemetery under Farmer Funeral Home direction.
Mrs. Nadine Maddox Johnson, former Silsbee resident and poet, is listed in the current Who's Who of American Women. A biographical sketch will appear, detailing her books and songs.
T Sgt and Mrs Joe Knupple with children and T Sgt and Mrs Dominick Procopio with children from San Antonio visited during the weekend at the Joe Knupple Sr home in town.
A long list of weekend visits and family travel across towns including Baytown Jasper Nederland and Spring Texas plus hospital updates. Names mentioned include Bartle Bland Swarthout Kaemmerling Barrow Jett Favors Hall Stott Brenham Houston Roberson Pelton Holland Heffner Williams Satterwhite Barker Womack Lancaster Belchme Bell Bishoy Goodwyre and others with hospital stays reunions and holiday plans.
DeMolay members Norman Rucker Pat Richard on Tommy Gene Stagner Larry Lee Allen Charles Tar ver Bobby Marshall Robert Ward James Moore Tommy reel and Gene Richardson attended initiation in Houston. About 200 boys were initiated into the world championship degree teams Reagan and Park Place chapters. The Scott Rite Temple hosted the event with roughly 700 DeMolay Boys and Masons in attendance.
Mrs Louise Hill, who underwent an operation in Beaumont last week, was returned to her home here Tuesday to continue convalescence. She hopes to be up and around soon and thanked the Kiwanis Club and Lions Club of Silsbee for flowers and messages received in the hospital.
The editor recalls Thanksgiving past gatherings with a large family, traditional food including turkey and ambrosia, and festive work and prayer. Family meals under pecan trees, older boys aiding in prep, and a joyful, close-knit holiday atmosphere are described as memories from 1958.
Mr and Mrs EB Hemming Way and their children from Port Neches arrived Wednesday for a visit at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs F Hemingway.
Silsbee Junior High Tigers defeated Amelia 36 25 to notch their third win of the season. Earlier they beat Amelia 32 16 and topped C E Me rthur 40 33. Next game vs Dick Dowling in Beaumont at 3 45 p m Wednesday.
Hagen Bros. Circus elephant that killed James Lloyd in Groves Monday was slated to perform in Nederland Wednesday with no action to dispose of the animal. Lloyd, 28, of New York City, was crushed while being led water by another worker as the elephant drug him and did two headstands on his chest. Lloyd had worked with the circus about four months. body sent to Clayton Funeral Home in Freehold, New Jersey.
The Silsbee Garden Club staged its annual flower show at Cravens Hall in First Methodist Church on Tuesday November 25. Mrs. E B Brown was general chairman and the theme was Holiday Melodies. Winners across classes included Mrs. C B Davenport, Mrs. Hamp Wade, Mrs. Sam P Copeland, Mrs. J D Moore, Mrs. Earl Stover, Mrs A L Tucker, Mrs F S Payne, Mrs Eric Krumm, Mrs FE Brown, Mrs W C McNeil, Mrs S T Walker, Mrs J G Lee, and others, with several entries noted for outstanding materials and special ribbons.
Nine hunters faced fines ranging from 100 to 150 with costs after spike buck violations in Judge J M Bowman court. Names include Thomas Sidney Hooks Richard Roberts and Cliff Durmon tied to unlawful deer charges in the Loeb Ariola area.
Mrs. George W. Golliher announces the engagement and approaching marriage of her daughter Virginia to Joe Wayne Self. Virginia is a Silsbee High School graduate now employed by Silsbee State Bank. Self, a former Marine who served three and a half years, works for East Texas Pulp and Paper in Evadale. They plan a January 2 wedding at the bride’s home and will reside in Silsbee after a brief wedding trip.
A $153 000 contract to Carter Work Contractor Kountze Elmer Ingle for an L shaped expansion at 345 South Fourth Street will enlarge the Silsbee telephone building to 94 by 133 feet. Work will add switching equipment office quarters and training rooms with reinforced concrete and brick exterior and involve Western Electric installers. Completion is expected next summer.
Azalea Garden Club met Tuesday afternoon at Mrs. B. R. Norman's home with Mrs. Ray Brown as cohostess. Newly elected president Mrs. J. M. Huddleston led the business meeting. Mrs. R. E. Jackson gave a program on Plants and Flowers of the Holy Land. The next meeting is planned for November 10 at Mrs. Ray Brown's Evadale home with gift exchange.

Douglas Hall recently discharged from the Army after 18 months in Europe spent the weekend visiting relatives. A Silsbee High School graduate, he now lives in Houston and will attend the University of Houston next term.
Shirley Lamey and Henry Lee Holland wed in a candlelight ceremony at Woodcrest Methodist Church. Rev. Edgar Marcontel officiated. bridal party included Nelda Davis and Ge rtha Lamey as sisters of the bride, and Yvonne Holland as sister of the groom. The couple will reside in Beaumont. he works for Cameron Wholesale Supply and she is a nurse.
Jerry Zuber of the Silsbee Chamber announces withdrawal of a 100 prize Dec coration contest for businesses and homes. He cites limited funds but says other Christmas promotion events will continue, including a 10 day Santa visit and four special Saturday promotions.
Five persons faced county court and jail outcomes last week. Geraldine Turner Shelia Sharp and R S Turner pleaded guilty to adultery with fines of 100 dollars plus costs. Bobby Harrison faced a 500 bond and not guilty plea. Peggy Bartlett Martin Lewis Ivy Smith appear in other cases with fines or indictments.
The Sabine Neches Professional Amateur Golf Tourney will be at Silsbee Golf and Country Club Friday November 28 with tee-off around 10 o clock. About 10 golfers from area clubs are expected to compete as winter grass greens have formed a good mat. Other clubs in the loop include Port Arthur Country Club Masure Island Golf Course of Port Arthur Greve s Golf Course Tyrrell Park Beaumont Beaumont Country Club and Sunset Grove of Orange.
A spring type magazine plunger from a firearm was found near Village Creek off highway 418 last Sunday and turned in at the Bee office by C. D. Creasy of Silsbee. The owner may claim the item at the Bee office.
Chief E. G. Thornol of BTC returned from eight months aboard the USS Shangri La. He visits Silsbee and Beaumont for three weeks with relatives before heading to San Mego California. After February 1 he will be stationed in Albuquerque New Mexico. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Thorpol.
