Hardin County redistricting meeting ends with walkout

A joint Har din County Commissioners Court and Citizens Redistricting Committee meeting broke up after committee member Frank Carpenter walked out following a heated exchange. The dispute centered on merging Pine Ridge and Silsbee areas, with votes splitting between Carpenter and Court supporters over which plan to adopt. The next court session for the related lawsuit was moved to Nov. 30.

Trustees Hear SISD Audit Report and Accreditation Plan

Two Silsbee Girls Return Home After Missing Since Oct 22

Police say Mickey Copeland 14 and Kathy Brewer 15 returned to Silsbee parents Tuesday after being found in Aransas Pass on Nov 9 by San Patricio County deputies. John Brewer thanks law enforcement and helpers for the recovery.

Lumberton Child Dies In Auto Crash In Lumberton

Morgan Wade Smith ten month old son of Mr and Mrs W L Red Smith of Lumberton died in surgery at St Elizabeth Hospital at 12 15 pm Tuesday from injuries in a two car crash that morning. His mother Sherry Smith 26 and the other car occupants Earl Fox 22 and Mrs E L Fox 63 of Kirbyville were injured. Highway Patrolman N W Barrow investigated the crash at about 9 30 am at the US 96 south of Silsbee and the Chance Cut Off Road Four Corners intersection. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Kelley Hixson Funeral Home with Rev James Bradford officiating. Burial was in Loeb Cemetery. City Council tackles park sites and unsafe building rules

Silsbee city leaders held a three hour meeting on November 10 to discuss park site work and a new ordinance targeting dilapidated structures. Citizens urged progress at Waldo Mathews and the old bus barn sites while City Manager Ronald Hickerson cited weekend crews and completing street and water work. He promised asphalt courts, goals and swing sets after the year ends and proposed leasing a park site near Prince Hall Villa. The council planned a Parks and Recreation Commission and postponed action on dilapidated structures until November 24.

County approves Atlantic Oil gas and jail contracts

Hardin County Commissioners Court moved to award the 1970 71 gas and jail contracts to Atlantic Richfield Oil Co after considering bids from Gulf Oil Corp and Angelina Oil Co C E Landolt Jr presented Atlantic bid highlighting 100 octane gasoline at 01445 per gallon The court also authorized hiring two doctors for Hardin Memorial Hospital and two clinic staff for two weeks to assist the Saratoga clinic with patient record computerized tasks The meeting included carpet plans for sheriff quarters and payments to move polling place equipment plus a National Cash Register accounting machine proposal

Three Men Held On Burglary, Stolen Money Order

Robert Smith, 47, of 2816 St. Charles, Houston, arrested Oct. 30 in Houston by Silsbee Police Chief Edgar Blood and Detective Morris Cole on charges of passing stolen money orders in Silsbee Oct. 10. Bond set at $20,000-$10,000 for two counts. arraigned in Houston. held in Hardin County Jail.

Victor Men Still Missing After Fishing Mishap

The Coast Guard and other agencies continued a search on Tuesday for Vernon Lusk 41 and John J. Keddy 53 both ironworkers on a Carruth Dishman project at Mobil Oil Refinery Beaumont missing after a fishing trip at Lake Sabine their 14 foot aluminum boat capsized about a mile off the Louisiana shore a day earlier Lusk is an expectant father grandfather to Geraldine Gore of Silsbee and father of Earline Gore also of Silsbee Keddy is the father of six children.

Autos Stolen and Burglaries Hit Silsbee

Silsbee police blotter reports two auto thefts and a burglary between Nov 4 and 8. A 1968 Lincoln belonging to Dr. S. P. Copeland was found burned and destroyed in Victor after a ditch crash. Birdwell's Department Store was burglarized before 9 am on Nov 5, stealing two imitation fur coats. A 1967 Plymouth was also reported stolen from W A Robertson near midnight.

Moonshine raid nets Saratoga man in Hardin County

Hardin County deputies and a state game warden seized a whisky still and mash during a raid on Monday. L. L. Brown of Saratoga was arrested for unlawful possession of a whisky-making apparatus, arraigned before Rex Moore, and posted $3,000 bond. Confiscated were a 55-gallon cooker, two smaller barrels, and the still. No liquor was found.

Two Home Fires Strain Silsbee Volunteers

Silsbee volunteers fought two Sunday fires that destroyed Mrs. Simmons East Avenue J home and damaged Henry Hudson on 21st Street. A 34,000 volt line fire on US 96 East prompted Gulf States Utilities crew rescue. About 16 firefighters attended each blaze as Chief Busby cited undetermined origin for Simmons and a kitchen spark for Hudson.

Tigers Rally Past Cleveland For 22-6 Victory

Silsbee Tigers seize sole second in District 11-AAA by defeating Cleveland 22-6. Bubba McGallion score capped an 80 yard drive. Mec Gallion connected with James Hunter for a 30 yard TD, and Arthur Rodriguez kicked a 25 yard field goal. Cleveland's only points came on a 75 yard pass and run to Patrick Ruffin.
