New Hardin County Sheriff Billy Paine Takes Office

Sheriff Billy E Paine was sworn in to fill the unexpired term of Henry O Overstreet on November 4 in the 88th District Courtroom. He won 5012 votes in the June 6 Democratic primary runoff and ran unopposed in the November 3 general election. Paine announced his staff and invited the public to a free cake and coffee event at the Sheriff's Office 6 to 9 p m.

Tigers Meet Tough Indians Here Friday

Third ranked Cleveland Indians clash with District 11 AAA runner up Silsbee Tigers Friday at Kirby Memorial Stadium. Cleveland seeks to end its 5 2 season slate while Silsbee relies on defense and a rising offense led by QB Mike Cohn RB Ronnie Brooks and WR Riley Carrington. Masonic Grand Master to preside at cornerstone ritual

Hal Burnett, Most Worshipful Grand Master of Texas Freemasonry, will preside over the leveling of the cornerstone for First United Methodist Church auditorium in Silsbee. Burglars Target Homes Automobiles and Local Businesses

Silsbee police investigated auto thefts and break ins on Oct. 29 and 30. A Homelite saw and a tire and wheel were stolen from vehicles at the hospital and log truck site. A home on Hayes Road was burglarized with a bridal ring set, jewelry, radio, stereo, watches, and tools taken. A missing 1966 Buick was later recovered in San Augustine. Thirteen white wall tires and rims were stolen from Silsbee Auto Co behind the business. a 1970 Pinto windshield was shattered.

Lack All Democratic Nominees Retain Posts In Hardin County

In Hardin County on November 3 and 4, voters supported the Democratic slate, defeating write-ins and rejecting all seven proposed state amendments. County Judge Emmett Lack led write-ins 3,491 to 2,047 with Lum berton precinct early reports, while Lloyd Bentsen won the U S Senate race and Preston Smith remained governor. Absentee ballots and precinct tallies were listed, with canvass conducted November 4 at 10 am in Kountze.

Mrs Yarbrough Dies Here at 84 in Silsbee

Mrs. Katie Yarbrough 84 of Silsbee died Tuesday night after a lengthy illness. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2 p.m. at Farmer Funeral Chapel with Rev. Richard Whittington officiating. Burial in Magnolia Cemetery Beaumont. Survived by two daughters Minnie Maud Cooper and Katie Lee Jenkins five grandchildren 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Born in Arkansas she lived in Shreveport before moving to Silsbee nine years ago. A retired dental technician and Mount Olivet Baptist Church member.

Federal hearing set November ninth on redistricting dispute

Commissioners call a Friday meeting of the Citizens Redistricting Committee at 1 30 p m to try to break a deadlock over two districting plans. Federal Judge Joe Fisher scheduled a November ninth hearing on a Silsbee citizens suit alleging the plan would disenfranchise voters and delay their ability to vote on commissioners for up to six years.

County Eyes Silsbee Post Office Site For County Offices

Hardin County will use the old Silsbee post office property as a County offices site while a new post office is built. An option to buy or lease purchase runs to July 1, 1971 with ownership by the Hirst and Hanlon families of Tulsa. A committee of Silsbee businessmen will assist in the negotiations.

Silsbee Man Hurt in Two-Car Crash on FM 92

Bronson Jeffcoat 47 of Star Route Silsbee sustained a suspected broken neck when his 1970 GMC pickup rear-ended Norma Drake Glenn 29 of Silsbee and overturned on FM 92 north of Silsbee. Glenn escaped injury and Jeffcoat remained hospitalized in satisfactory condition at St Elizabeth Hospital Beau mont.

Tax Collection Tour In Hardin County Dropped For 1970

Hardin County will not conduct the annual tax collection tour for 1970. County Tax Assessor Fred Anders said taxpayers can mail remittances or pay in person at the Tax Office in the Hardin County Courthouse in Kountze. He cited higher workload from 35 000 items on the 1970 tax roll, up 2 000 from last year, with delinquent date set as February 1 1971.

Man Gets 20 Years For Rape

John Henry Webb of Kountze was sentenced to 20 years in the State Penitentiary at Huntsville in 88th District Court in Kountze last Thursday on a charge of rape. Webb pleaded guilty Oct. 29 after jury selection was announced. Judge H. A. Coe denied a venue change and a continuance but allowed jurors to be questioned separately due to the crime's seriousness and publicity.
