Two Charged With Theft and Five Break-ins Probe

Silsbee Police arrested two men in connection with a service station theft and investigated five thefts and two attempted burglaries from Friday to Monday, with three cases under review. J. W. Smith and Billy Keith faced warrants. Keith posted bond while Smith awaited Harris County custody.

Lumberton School Bond Issue Loses Amid Tight Vote

Lumberton voters defeated the $610,000 junior high bond in a May 16 election with 650 property owners and 29 nonowners voting against. An $899,000 bond earlier failed on February 9. supporters argued growth requires facilities while opponents warned of crowding and delays.

Three Injured In City Auto Mishaps

City police reported three injuries from two auto crashes on May 14 and 15. Four year old Charles Arline Jr. of Silsbee was injured when struck by Lonnie Beard. In a separate crash Mrs. Nan Miller and Mrs. Lola Coward of Spurger were hurt at US 96 South and Avenue M involving Charlie Miller and Johnnie Pelt. Charles Miller was cited for failure to yield right of way.

Six Indicted by Hardin County Grand Jury

The Hardin County Grand Jury, meeting May 18, returned true bills against six individuals including W. T. Callaway of Silsbee for murder in the April 28 shotgun slaying of Bobby Gene Segrest. Four others were no-billed for lack of evidence.

Frank Robinson School To Open As Kindergarten In September

The Silsbee Independent School District board announced May 13 that Frank Robinson School will start kindergarten in September for the 1970-71 year. First and second graders will move to Kirby Elementary and third and fourth graders to Read-Turrentine Elementary. The board also deferred a land purchase and approved a new vocational agriculture class at the high school. A six week summer recreation program for grades four through eight will run June through mid July, supervised by Richard Strong.

Eastex and Schools Boost Silsbee Library Fund

Eastex Inc contributed 500 dollars toward the Silsbee Public Library Building Fund, bringing week donations to 2,078.39 dollars with gifts from Kirby Elementary Read-Turrentine Elementary O Neil Intermediate and Silsbee Junior High. The funds will finance an 18 253 48 by 64 foot addition at Santa Fe Park to triple space for about 33 000 volumes.

Mrs. C. C. Brooks Dies in Corpus Christi

Funeral services for Mrs. C. O. Brooks Syr. 72 a native of Livingston and sister of Mrs. W. C. McNeil of Silsbee were held at Cage Mills Funeral Home Corpus Christi with Rev. Melvin Morris. Burial followed at Seabrook Memorial Park. She died May 17 in a Corpus Christi convalescent center after a long illness. Survivors include her sister a son and six grandchildren.

Pitch Hit Throw Registration To End On Friday

With the 1970 baseball season opening, boys aged nine to twelve can enter the Pitch Hit and Throw competition sponsored by the major leagues. Registration runs April 7 through May 22 at participating Phillips 66 dealers with a Rand Oil Company co sponsor in the Silsbee area. Free entry requires a guardian, and each participant receives a tips booklet.

GSU IBEW Move Toward New Labor Contract

Local 2286 IBEW and Gulf States Utilities hold talks to end a strike that began April 22 after 16 Baton Rouge layoffs. Silsbee members walked out April 24 in support as IBEW pursues its first contract with GSU. Davis said negotiations have been ongoing since October 6. Mrs. L. F. C of C Urges Voters To Support Road Bond Election

Art Cawthon of the Silsbee Chamber of Commerce urged Hardin County voters to support a $2 million road bond on May 23. He warned passage would fund new farm to market roads and a four lane US 96 link from Silsbee to Lumberton, with tax impact around $4 yearly on a $16 000 home.

Lumberton Youth Dies In Car Crash Near Victor

Ronald Lee Brown 17 died on SH 10 when his auto hit a steel sign post at 4 15 a m Sunday. Four passengers, Otis R Brown 15 Labelle O Brown 16 James Collins 16 and James Allen Hidalgo 21 Beaumont in serious condition. Funeral for Richard Brown held at First Baptist Loeb. Burglars Steal Large Pill Haul From Kountze Pharmacy

Police report a break in at Kountze Pharmacy where thieves shattered a glass door at 5 10 am Sunday and fled with 1400 to 1600 amphetamine and iron tablets. Officers say they entered by striking a thick glass window and escaped in about three minutes. only drugs were taken, the cash register safe untouched. The investigation was active at presstime.

Police report vandals attacked the Grady Trimble law office in Kountze between midnight and dawn Tuesday May 19. Bricks mortared together shattered the front window and stained the reception area. Wall repair completed by Tuesday afternoon as investigation continues. This follows an April vandalism incident with black paint on the door and shingle.
