A 12 year old Silsbee girl Brenda Kay Alexander died on arrival at Silsbee Doctors Hospital after a front porch collapsed on her uncle's Hicks Dairy Road home. Four others were injured and treated at area hospitals.

Hardin County deputies report two breakins over the weekend. The Kingburger Drive-In in Lumberton was entered by knocking in a door, with about 560 dollars in cash and 50 dollars in checks missing. In Artesian Acres near Lumberton, Joe Barraque’s home yielded around 700 dollars in firearms and 129 dollars in cash after the front door was kicked in. Both investigations were ongoing at press time.

Bond Issue Absentee Voting Ends May 19
County voters may cast absentee ballots for the May 23 road bond election until 5 p.m. May 19. The $2 million bond plan funds road improvements over 10 years including a four lane US 96 highway from Silsbee to Lumberton Y, aimed at saving lives and improving school bus safety. Lack Gains 17 Votes In Recount
In a May 8 recount of the May 2 Democratic Primary, County Judge hopeful Lack gained 17 votes to win 4109-4029, extending his margin to 63. The recount confirmed J. M. Bowman’s 2 to 0 loss and Ray Martin defeating Bowman 589-587. Total votes counted were 8346 by officials and lawyers in the Hardin County Clerk’s office in Kountze.

Three Silsbee boys aged 8 to 14 will be selected to attend the Salvation Army Camp Hoblitzelle near Midlothian Texas from June 21 to 28. Police Chief Edgar Blood said selection will be announced May 22 and a Silsbee officer will drive the youths to the camp returning the next Sunday. Dr Sam P Copeland will provide medical exams for those chosen. Blood and local pastors will select the trio following meetings with pastors. Lydia Hyde returned home after visiting relatives in Norman Oklahoma Dallas Fort Worth and Temple.

Silsbee Little League Directors were surprised and grateful to receive a $100 donation Saturday for our League expansion program. Last Rites For Alvin Bayless Held May 12
Final rites for Alvin Julius Mavness Jr. 19, of Lumberton, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Teeb with Rev. James Brad ord officiating. Burial followed at seb Cemetery. Bayless was killed by a blast from a 20 gauge shotgun after an argument with a Houston man in the Highlands district. He died on arrival at Gulf Coast Hospital in Baytown. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin J. Bayless, four brothers Larry, Ronald, Robert and Gary Bayless, a sister Brenda Kay Bayless, all of Lumberton, and grandparents Mrs. Nillie Burge of Lumberton and Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Bayless of Alba, plus grandmother Mrs. Frank Gue of Beaumont.
