Council Hears Charges Against City Manager

The Silsbee City Council on May 26 heard charges against City Manager Ronald Hickerson and other city employees, brought by J. C. Busby. He contends an illegal arrest over an unpaid garbage bill and challenges the city's ordinance. City attorney Leon Crum and Houston Thompson defended the actions, noting future Supreme Court review and backing by the Texas Municipal League. Busby says payments delay due to disputes over amounts owed.

Road bonds fail in Hardin County by wide margin

Hardin County voters rejected a $2 million road bond issue aimed at funding right of way purchases and road improvements over 10 years. With 1191 against and 561 for, the measure failed as it required a two thirds majority in both property owner and non property owner boxes. Official returns show scattered support and strong opposition across towns.

Thieves Take Nine Dollars in Gulf Warehouse Burglary

Police report a Monday night burglary at the Gulf Bulk Warehouse on North 5th Street. Thieves peeled a two foot square hole in the back, entered the office, stole nine dollars in pennies, and unlocked the front door to exit. Investigation ongoing.

Mrs. Gladys Sweatt Injured In Auto Accident Sunday

Mrs. Gladys Roberson Sweatt, 50, of Silsbee, was reported in good condition at Silsbee Doctor's Hospital after a one car wreck Sunday on FM 418 at about 7 55 p m. Her 1969 Oldsmobile was destroyed with about 3200 dollars damage. The widow of Norman H. Sweatt, who died in an April 1969 crash.

Last Rites For J. V. Perdue 75 Held in Lumberton

Funeral services for James V. Perdue 75 of Lumberton were held at 2 p m Wednesday at Lumberton First Baptist Church with Rev. Rowat Smith and others officiating. Graveside rites followed at Camp Ruby Cemetery at 4 p m Pallbearers included Lloyd Lambright Leroy Rhoden Joe Walker Jerrell Marconi O R Perdue Jr Dr Jimmy Brown and Les Courson Perdue died on arrival at Baptist Hospital after being a longtime machinist for American Locomotive Co and a member of the AFL CIO Machinists Union He was a Sumner County native who lived in the Beaumont area 45 years Surviving are his wife four brothers and two sisters.

Youth killed by sheriff car in Saratoga manhunt case

After a clothing store burglary near Saratoga, Amanda Villarreal 16 was struck and killed by a Hardin County Sheriff auto driven by Deputy Dale Smith as suspects John Michael Kelley 22 and John Edward Shiffield 17 were captured. An autopsy was ordered to determine if Villarreal was dead before impact.

Buford Curtis Injured in Oilfield Accident Near Buna

Buford Curtis owner of Curtis Welding Service was injured May 20 while freeing a steel beam on the Big Six oil rig near Buna. He suffered a concussion a broken collar bone and facial lacerations. Curtis was released from Baptist Hospital in Beaumont and is recovering at home with his wife reporting steady progress.

Firemen Receive $25 Check From Kansas Oil Co

Silsbee Volunteer Fire Department received a 25 payment from Arco Pipeline Co of Independence Kansas on May 22 for the department s part in clearing North 5th Street of oil spilled earlier this year by a company truck. Fire Chief John Busby said the payment was unsolicited and expressed appreciation for the recognition of their services.

Fire Chief John Busby said two houses were destroyed in separate fires fought by the Silsbee Volunteer Fire Department last week. The latest blaze began at 2 am on Tuesday May 26 of undetermined origin.

Tavern Destroyed by Fire in Village Mills

At about 2 30 a m Wednesday a fast spreading blaze of unknown origin consumed the Gaiety Inn Tavern in Village Mills and the adjacent home of owner Walter Santos. Santos and his wife woke to smoke and flames in the rear kitchen area and escaped with clothes after two emergency calls. The Sheriffs Department in Kountree had not reported any word by 8 a m. Mrs. Santos said her call did not go through.

Census Data Delayed for County Redistricting Plan

Hardin County Commissioners learn 1970 federal census data will not be available until January 1, 1971 for redistricting. County Judge Emmett Lack cited a state attorney general ruling, while the court discussed garbage disposal contracts, raises for staff, and funding for Tri County Health Bureau. They also planned a federal license letter to help Lumberton Volunteer Fire Department operate a new FM radio system.

Silsbee Chamber Plans Annual Membership Campaign

The Silsbee Chamber of Commerce Directors and Membership Committee met at Silsbee State Bank. President W A Barclay Jr outlined welcomes for new residents and a mailed list of active members. Absentee Voting Underway for Hardin County Runoff

Absentee voting for the June 6 run off democratic primary began May 27 and runs through June 2. Voters may cast ballots 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the County Clerk's office in Hardin County Courthouse Kountze. Race choices include Pet 2 Road Commissioner for Lumberton and Kountze. Post Office Windows to Close Saturdays Starting May 30

Post office window service will shift to a five day schedule beginning with Memorial Day weekend. Saturday window hours will end, with box and route delivery continuing. money orders on rural routes will be discontinued. Weekday service remains 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. until further notice.

Silsbee Woman Injured In Auto Crash On Sunday

Silsbee resident Coral Winegeart, 62, was injured in a Sunday morning crash on Lee Miller Road after pulling her 1970 Dodge from a private drive and colliding with a parked 1952 Chevrolet owned by Charles Edward Clover, 21, of San. Police Patrolman Ed Thedford reported the incident.
