The $18,253 expansion begun May 6 adds a 48 by 64 foot southside wing to the Silsbee Public Library. Plans triple space to about 33,000 books, adding adult and young adult areas, a reference and study zone, and a librarian’s work room.
Herbert Lee Colins, 32, of Silsbee, posted a $3000 bond for murder after the Thursday night shooting death of Eddie Floyd Bailey at his father's home near Fresenius Road. Authorities say Bailey was killed by a single blast from a 20 gauge shotgun as he ate supper. Collins surrendered to Silsbee Police and was jailed in Hardin County. Funeral services for Bailey were held at Coleman Funeral Home with burial in Resthaven Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Fay Bailey, a son, Donald Ray, a daughter, Arlissa, his father Lindsey Bailey Sr., four brothers and four sisters.
Lumberton Independent School District voters face May 16 in an election on a $610000 bond to fund a new junior high school. The Improve Lumberton Committee led petitions to back construction amid overcrowding concerns and isolation of funds from a vocations building or athletic field. Absentee voting runs through May 12 at the School Superintendent’s office.
Hardin County voters will decide a $2 million road bond issue on May 23 after months of deliberation and several false starts. Silsbee Chamber of Commerce backs the plan to fund ten years of road improvements with emphasis on FM routes and safety for all residents. A tax increase, likely small, would be needed to cover interest and principal while existing bonds in Silsbee precinct are retired. A two thirds vote is required. property owners and non owners may participate.
A Wednesday meeting between Herman Adams Jr and two attorneys set mechanics for a thorough recount of the County Judge and Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace contests. Cecil Cain and J M Bowman seek the recount. Emmett Lack leads in the Judge race by 63 votes. Bowman loses Precinct 2 JP race by two votes to Ray Martin.
An April 30 mistrial ended the State case against May Bell Hageon 47 charged with murder in the July 25 stabbing death of husband Willie Hageon 58. Judge H A Coe cited a hung jury after juror James T Austin reported no verdict. Prosecutors R S Coe and Dwayne Overstreet. defense Grady Trimble.
Funeral services for Dave E Conner age 50 owner of Conner's Drive-In Cafe were held at 2 pm Saturday at Farmer Funeral Home chapel. Rev Jerry Clark officiated with Masonic graveside rites by Rockland Lodge 960 in Farrell Cemetery near Colmesneil. Conner was dead on arrival.
Negotiations between Gulf States Utilises Co. and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2286 were set to resume Wednesday at 2 p m in the Ridgewood Motor Hotel Beau mont. Federal official Gail Wincrster said he would stay in contact and assist as possible. The IBEW has picketed since April 22 after a Baton Rouge dispute in which 15 lineworkers walked off over a picket line on an adjacent site and sought pay for about two and a half hours not worked.
Silsbee Police investigated two thefts over the weekend. On Friday at 4:50 p.m., Helen Landry reported her purse containing 102 dollars missing from Prince Hall Villa washhouse after a brief absence. On Sunday at 10:56 p.m., Jo Ann Stevenson reported a wallet containing 15 dollars taken from Lone Star Grocery as a suspect left the store.
Mr and Mrs R L Read spent last weekend in Houston visiting in the home of Mr and Mrs Randy Read.
County Judge Emmett Lack retained his seat by a 6 vote margin over Cecil Cain in the Democratic Primary. Sheriff Tom Easley and Commissioner Howard Barrington faced runoffs with Billy Paine and Oscar Adams, while Henry Donelson vied with Versie Flowers for County Treasurer. Recounts were expected as canvassers finalized the official county totals.
County Clerk Clarence McNeely reported seeing four men, including Deputy Ira Moore and Judge Lack, outside his office at the county courthouse between 1 30 and 2 00 am Tuesday during a recount preparation for Saturday's Democratic Primary ballots stored in McNeely's private office.
John Jordan is valedictorian at Lumberton High School. He has led the student council and National Honor Society, earned Who's Who in American High Schools honors, and contributed to the annual staff and math club. He plans to enter Lamar State College of Technology in September for re engineering studies. He lives with his parents, Mr and Mrs C T Jordan of Lumberton.

Inexco Oil Co. completed it at 10,010 to 19 feet with an open hole flow of 4,300,060 cu ft gas and 316 barrels of 50.6 API condensate. Bottom pressure 3,025 psi. Located on G. W. Brooks lease block in Newton Chambers and Galveston counties.
Traffic authority W A Collier of Silsbee announced that FM 92 and FM 418 at the accident prone intersection will switch to a traffic actuated signal system Friday. The new solid state controller, first of its kind in District 20, auto detects waiting cars and changes to green. an electronic conflict monitor offers a brief signal as the lights cycle. The lights were blinking until Friday to alert drivers to the change.
