Silsbee advocates urge Congress to fund the McGee Bend Dam along the Angelina River. They argue the project will deliver electric power, boost jobs, attract visitors, and create a beautiful recreation lake for East Texas residents, outweighing temporary inconveniences.
Funeral services were held for Betty Jo Rutledge 27 Sour Lake and her nine year old daughter Lynda Irene in Sour Lake First Methodist Church. Rev. Charles Danheim led burial at Rosedale Cemetery. Lynda Irene died when Grace Malone’s eastbound car rear ended Rutledge’s eastbound pickup, flames trapped the girl, a central fire unit fought the blaze. All four occupants of the Malone car were hospitalized along with two Malone sons James Steven 8 and William Franklin 6.
Mrs. R. H. Ernst and Mrs. O. D. Heffner attended the Christian Women’s Fellowship workshop held Monday at Washington Boulevard Christian Church in Beaumont.
Four youths were arrested in Silsbee by Police Chief Grady Tarver, ending a wave of gasoline thefts and petty theft in Silsbee and nearby counties. Three suspects confessed to burglaries at Leideld Ranch near Buna in Jasper County. two moved toward Jasper jail for charges, while Louis Mills admitted petty theft in city court and paid a fine. Most loot recovered. sheriff assistance noted.
Gulf States Utilities announces Lloyd N. Brannan to Beaumont as supervisor of area development, exchanging with Lamoyne Goodwin who moves to Silsbee as district superintendent. Transfers take effect May 1. Brannan's long service includes leadership roles in Silsbee and civic activities. Goodwin's career spans Beaumont and Lake Charles with farm and system director roles.
Silsbee Chamber of Commerce directors voted at a special April 17 meeting to hire a part time secretary for 100 dollars a month. Mrs Lenox Hawthorne will assist Chamber Manager H C Hopkins in the afternoons. They also set a May 15 community progress forum and approved paying Dr Richard Setzer of Lamar Tech 50 dollars for banquet speaker services, with any pay forwarded to his church.
The Silsbee Little League Auxiliary elected officers for the new season with Mrs. B. G. Ward as president, Mrs. Doyle McKeown as vice president, and Mrs. James Downey as secretary and treasurer. Mothers with sons in the league are asked to attend a concession stand clean up Friday at 1 p.m. at the Little League park. Another mothers meeting is set for Wednesday at 4 p.m. at John Henry Kirby School.
The 12 county Trinity Neches council of the Boy Scouts of America will host a council wide training conference for all junior troop leaders at Camp Orland near Woodville on Saturday May 3. Nolan Boyd council leadership training chairman of Beaumont said the event invites Scoutmasters assistant scoutmasters senior patrol leaders assistant patrol leaders junior assistant scoutmasters quartermasters scribes and den chiefs. A noon meal will be served in the Orland dining hall to those who reserve by mail to the council office Box 631 Beaumont.
Silsbee Junior High Band leads a parade of Little League players from Blue Bonnet Cafe to the ballpark near Kirby mill to open the 1958 season. East Texas Transit Mix vs Chance Loeb and Morris Pharmacy vs Buna highlight Saturday’s two games at the Silsbee league opener.
Read-Turrentine elementary principal Mrs. W E Sheffield announced first grade students for the next term must register at the high school gym today from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event covers Read-Turrentine and Kirby attendance. Bring a birth certificate showing birth on or before Sept. 1, 1952 and a smallpox vaccination if available. The county health nurse will administer the vaccination if needed.
Silsbee Chamber of Commerce led by Martin Wilson and H C Hopkins announces a one day Community Progress Forum on May 15 at the Fire Hall auditorium. East Texas Chamber of Commerce oversees the program with six sessions from 8 30 a m. Citizens are urged to attend. forum aims to boost growth and chamber membership.
A public hearing to decide if an election will be called on the Evadale Gist road bond project is scheduled for 9 a.m. May 3 in Jasper district court. Petitions with over 200 voter signatures backed the call. the plan covers about 24 miles of blacktop and right-of-way purchases on U S 96 to a proposed Neches River bridge.
The Hardin county grand jury returned 11 indictments to 88th district court in Kountze last week. District clerk Willis Selman reported. Indictments include theft, child desertion, DWI second offense, two robbery by assault, three defrauding with worthless checks, and three forgery charges.
B F Gilbert of Silsbee suffered severe injuries to a hand when a pickup truck overturned about three miles west of Buna on highway 92 Wed evening. A trailer of cattle shifted during the crash, causing the vehicle to tip. Gilbert was treated at the scene and rushed to Hotel Dieu hospital in Beaumont by Farmer ambulance.
