Fred R. Hardy Opens FRH Lumber Co Sawmill Near Silsbee

Fred R. Hardy of Silsbee announces the FRH Lumber Co an all electric over air sawmill east of the US 96 and Highway 327 intersection with a projected capacity of 30 35 thousand board feet per day The 10 employee plant begins operation tests on Tuesday March 17 and aims for full production next week The mill will cut hardwood logs into lumber up to 22 feet long and produce items from three by threes to crossties and larger lumber R A Martindale will manage with up to nine workers Debarked logs are fed by a John Deere loader into a 60 inch saw and lumber moves to beds by a 40 foot live roller bed The facility could yield about 500 000 dollars in lumber annually and a future handle factory is possible

Ten Seek Four Lumberton School Board Seats

Ten candidates file for four seats on the Lumberton Independent School District Board in the April 4 trustee election. Three three year terms include incumbents Kenneth Kirkendall Place 3 and Jim Stinson Place 4, both facing challengers. Place 7 asks four candidates for a one year term. Voting is 8 am to 7 pm at the elementary cafeteria with Darnell Gardner as judge. Absentee voting runs March 31 at the administration office.

Mrs. Victoria Seaman Dies In Beaumont

Funeral services for Mrs. Victoria Hickman Seaman 85 of Beaumont were held at Kelley-Hixson with Rev. R C Dearman and Rev. Andy Radke officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Beaumont. She died at Baptist Hospital after 8 a m Friday. Survivors include a daughter Berdie Rogers and five sons with residences listed in Town Bluff Silsbee Beaumont Lake Charles plus two sisters and fourteen grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Final Rites Held Wednesday For Emil O. Slavik

Emil O Slavik 60 longtime Silsbee businessman and fire marshal died Monday in Houston Methodist Hospital after surgery. Funeral at All Souls Catholic Church with burial in Resthaven Cemetery. Survivors include wife Nell Slavik daughter Jill Clark and several siblings. Pallbearers named with honorary fire department members.

Appellate briefing in Byrd armed robbery case heard

Eddie Ray Byrd 29 filed an appellate brief with Judge H A Coe in 88th District Court seeking review of his May 1969 armed robbery conviction and 101 year sentence. Both sides submitted briefs to be forwarded to the Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin. Byrd has been jailed in Hardin County at Kountze since May awaiting appeal.

Little Tiger Relays Set At Kirby Stadium This Week

The Little Tiger Relays will be held Thursday and Friday at Kirby Memorial Stadium with eighth and ninth graders from Junior High participating. Forty five area junior high schools are invited. Field events start Thursday at 1 p m and Friday’s running events begin at 1 p m with finals at 6 p m. The eighth grade won last week’s Beaumont meet.

Silsbee Police Probing Weekend Thefts

Silsbee police investigated three thefts from March 13 to 15. A 14 foot aluminum boat vanished from the Jeffcoat home and was found later in a roadside ditch. A purse stolen from Lavine Jackson's car contained identification and about eight dollars. A pickup truck on Raymond Robinson's property was broken into and items including a box of ammunition checks and a tire were taken. Probers also checked two prowler reports with no results.

Trustees Set Policy On Eligibility For State Kindergarten Program

Silsbee Independent School District approves a state kindergarten pilot for 1970 73 limited to educationally handicapped five year olds with low income and non English speakers. Jim B. Stinson files to seek reelection to Position 4 on the Lumberton Independent School District Board. A Lumberton resident six years, he cites three years on the board and his work with administration to improve schools. Methodists Receive $91326 Gift for Silsbee Sanctuary

Edward Wilson of Silsbee State Bank presented a 91326.36 check to the First United Methodist Church of Silsbee on March 13. The gift, from the Ella G. McKee estate, funds a proposed sanctuary and follows Mrs. McKee's wish after arranging other claims.

Lumberton Man Indicted on Forgery by Jefferson Jury

Murphy John Jarrell Jr., 29, of Lumberton, charged with forging and passing a forged instrument. A Jefferson County Grand Jury returned 12 true bills on March 12 including Jarrell for allegedly forging and cashing a $58.25 Sears check in Beaumont on December 9.

Hardin County Grand Jury returns seven indictments and five on-bills at the October term. Indicted: Henry Benson of Kountze for statutory rape. Treasurer filing draws appeal talk amid ballot dispute

As of March 18 no formal notice of appeal had been filed by Charles H. Newsom in the Hardin County treasurer dispute. B. F. Whitworth plans to submit an appeal, while opponents Donelson and Flowers began filing again. The executive committee reopened filings March 17 with a $2,040.00 net assessment and minimum $1,020.00 filing fee per candidate. Newsom, Flowers and Donelson were ruled ineligible March 16 for not meeting the assessment requirements within the allotted period.
